v-6 automatic
i have a whinning sound that you can hear in the cab, when you let off the gas or slow down it is more noticeable, sounds like gear whine, its a automatic, if you put it in neutral when your going down the road it goes away, i changed the filter and fluid and the noise is still there, also the truck seems a bit sluggish at take off, maybe a torque converter? If it was a rearend problem the noise would still be there if the you put in neutral goind down the road wouldnt it? any suggestions?

Message: Initally I woudl say rear noise but I'm not sure about the neutral, What gears do you have in the rear? I have 3.92's and it makes some noise on the highway. The 3.55's are quiet as a mouse. Next time i'm on the highway i'm goign to try putting it in neutral to see if the noise goes away.

Message: ALL coperate sets of rear ends from Dodge, whine, most notably around 40 mph. The 3:55's are the worst. Any LSD is better. If on the highway or at 40 mph, you let off on the gas-pedal (release thrust on the set) the whine goes away.
The only way to stop the sound from coming into the cab is to take out the rear seat(Club Cab) and then the carpet. You then use TWO rubber floor mats (I did this on my 2001 CC.) directly laid on the metal floor of the cab. Cut them to fit the space on the floor. You then return the carpet and all that you disturbed, and you will have gotten rid of the whine. It comes up from the rear floor of the cab.

Message: I'd suspect the torque converter or the tranny itself. Every time my tranny (A500) was getting ready to die, it'd start getting sluggish and it'd whine progressively til it croaked.

Message: at first i thought it was a rear end problem but, i dont think is now because if i'm going down the highway say 55mph and shift into the neutral all the whinning sound disappers however the ring and pinion and axle assy. would still be turn so the noise should still be there if it were in the rear end does that theory sound correct? i'm leaning more toward a torque converter but it could the transmission itself. i had it on the lift when i did the filter and fluid change and everything looked ok but maybe a planatary is going bad? it's been doing this for a year now. Shifts through the gears fine, no slipped or anything still has power and torque. also does anyone no if a regular 727 will work in its place? the only thing trouble i can think other than if it will bolt ect.. is that the tranny in the truck is electronic shift controlled?

Message: No, David, for when you shift into neutral, are you not releashing the inertia and torque on the gear set? Of course you are. :)
That is the same as just letting off on the gas and coasting...
Trust me on this. Most 'whine' coming into the cab' is from the Dodge rear-end and axle. Want to test this? Load up sleeping bags on the floor of the C.C. if you have it(pack them in tight). Then place the same on top of the seats in the C.C. area and put them mid high to the back of the front seats. Then go for a ride. You will notice a HUGE difference.

Message: My 97 CC 3.9 whines the same way and goes away when letting off the accelerator. I have noticed it pretty bad for the last 10,000 miles (140,000). But I'm getting real concerned about it. It will also go away when I sway the truck to the right. The dealer said that they naturally whine. My buddy told me it's pinion bearing\seal. But probably has gone on for too long now and there is too much play in the gears. My truck had been lowered(previous owner) and I just lifted it back to norm today. It has slightly gotten better. Prob a temp.fix. Do you guys think I will need to rebuild\replace the rear end. Please advise.
