Subject: Control Arm Drop for 2001
IP: Logged

Message:
Have had my 2001 Sport reg cab/4.7/5-spd for 6 weeks now, and couldn't wait so I ordered a Chassis Tech 3/4 lowering kit. Now I have 3" dropped control arms but can't get new ball joints anywhere. I'm VERY leary of "cutting" my factory ball joints off to press them onto my new control arms- if I or the shop screw up I'm hosed. Has anyone out there gone through this project with success, or should I send back the control arms and go with 3" springs?

I would have gone with springs (for that matter, I did go with springs). You're going to need stiffer springs than stock anyway, or you're going to bottom out.

Thanks Grant. I assume you went with 2" or 3" dropped springs. Any major problems with lack of suspension travel?- that's why I decided on control arms first.

I didnt know that anyone made a 3" control arm. any way I have a 2" arm and 2" spring. the shop that did my truck (Master Image Customs) took out my factory ball joint and reused it. works fine now (over 2 years and still going)
when i picked up my truck they said it was a BITCH to get out.
take it to a shop that has done it before

I have a 3" coil spring, 2" lower control arm setup up front. (Springs never settled like they were suppose to, maybe wrong ones(for V8)). Anyways, I went with DJM Suspension components, and the control arms came with the ball joints already attached, as well as the bumpstops.

low 99, i thought you had a 3/5 drop. do you have a 5/7 drop? i remember you having the stock 215/75R15's. if you do have a 5/7, don't you rub the hell out of your fenders? that combo is not possible. please clarify. latter

99 seems to be the cut-off for aftermarket ball joints(?). I've tried every parts house and suspension dealer in the magazines and on the web, no luck. Dodge says they'll gladly sell me a new pair- attached to a new set of stock control arms!

Eric, I do have a 3/5 drop. Originally I had just the springs up front, with the shackle and hanger kit out back. But the front springs never settled like they are suppose to, this is why I think they may have sent the ones for a V8. Not liking the backwards "raked look", I went and ordered the 2" lowered conrol arms, so now she finally sits the way she should.
