Subject: Front Axle Bearings Bad? IP: Logged
Message: Got a '91 Dak when in 4wd the front end grinds and binds when turning left or right. Took the diff cover off and the gears look ok. The driveshaft boots look ok (no tears).
Figure it might be the bearings on the right and left side axle shaft bad?
How bad of a job is it to tear into this (I'm an amatuer)? Are there any special tools? Any warnings?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Message: It is normal for the front end to bind if you are in 4WD on pavement!!There is nothing wrong with the front end.4WD should only be used on slippery or loose surfaces!!!

Message: 92dak is right but if the brngs are toast you will notice a grinding noise regardless of weather of not your in 4by or not
if your cv shafts are toast then you will hear more of a clicking sound when turning sharp in 4by
is the sound comming only is 4by or when driving down the road or when turning in 4by you need to be a bit more specific for any more of my help

Message: Replacing the bearing hubs takes about 1/2 hour a side if your slow. I replaced both sides in 45 minutes including new brake pads and rotors. You'll need a torque wrench that goes to at least 190 ft/lbs to re-torgue the spindle nut. Advanced Auto Parts sells the hubs for 90-95 bucks. And yes, you can remove the axle shafts without removing the steering knuckle. While you have things apart, check the outer diff. bearings and seals, CV joints and boots.
When you put is all back together, TORQUE the axle nut, axle flange bolts and hub/spindle bolts to spec.

Message: jd,
Your right, if the bearings were bad I'd hear in 2wd. I can drive ok in 2wd, is only in 4wd that I have problems. You can hear the 4wd growling a little when going straight, but it gets nasty the tighter and tighter you turn. This is at slow speeds (less than 15 mph). I hardly ever drive the 4wd over 35mph cause I heard they aren't designed for anything faster. I don't hear a clicking noise and the boots look ok. I figure maybe bad universal joints on the drive shaft?? I looked under the truck and could push and move the drive shaft. Would this cause a grinding and binding? Thanks for you help!
