Message: Air bags worked for me, I have a 2000 Dakota Sport, two wheel drive, 4.7 litre engine with auto tranny. I pull a 21 foot camper trailer, and the air bags do the trick. I also use the weight distribution bars with the trailer, hardly realize it's behind me.

Message: First off, your tow rating is probably around 6,000# or so, so you're not even close to that yet. Car weighs about 3400#, and trailer another 1500#??? But the factory does recommend a load equalizing hitch for any trailer >2,000# (it's in the fine print). So do that first.
Also, even though your truck is rated for 6,000#, most class III hitches are rated for 5,000# and 300# tongue weights without a load equalizer.
Second, the suspension is designed to handle a considerable amount of weight, but less tongue weight than you might think. The usual figure is about 10% of total weight. So your tongue weight should not be more 500-600#. You should move the car fore and aft until you hit the right balance.
If you're going to tow this car a lot, then you need to load it up and take it to the scales for a total wet weight and proper tongue weight. Once you do that you'll find that it tows a lot easier.
