Subject: What Did You Do With Your Stock Exhaust? IP: Logged
Message: I had a dual exahust installed at 1100 miles, the stock exhaust came off with out being cut up at all and is obviously in great condition...is it
worth keeping (I have no plans on ever instaling it back on)...is it worth much to sell, scrap, etc? The muffler shop wants to know what I'm gonna do with it, they're still holding it.
BTW, this is for a 2001 4.7 QC AWD

Message: Hmmm, maybe I'll go get it and stick under the deck or in the garage (not much space, may have to share some room with the '72 MACH1 (now my wife will be really upset, more junk she's gonna say))

Message: Mace,
Yours came right off? Did you do it yourself or did the shop do it? I have my Gibson system in the box and I was going to do it myself. Then I read on here what a pain in the ass it can be to get the stock system off. A place near me here in NY will do the install for $75. Does that seem like a decent price? Normally I do my own work but with the heat now and the aggravation factor (if it won't come off) might be worth $75 to me.

Message: Silver Bullet,
I did mine the wrong way. The problem is the factory clamp in front to the muffler. You are going to have to cut the behind the muffler anyway. You need to leave sufficient length of the original or cat tube so you can clamp on the head tube from Gibson. I read, you can heat the tubes and pull. I suggested that you could cut slits (2) along the length of muffler tube (a dremel). Do not cut the cat tube. Then with a cold chisel peel the muffler tube enough to pull the factory muffler off. My mistake, I cut both tubes right at the clamp. I lost about an inch and a half off the cat tube. This left about an inch or 1 1/8 inch to clamp on the Gibson head tube. It feels secure but probably not advisable. I couldn't push the head any further because there is a button or screw that goes into the slot of the Gibson head tube and prevents it from going on further. I guess you have to weigh $75 or more work. I like doing the work myself even though I make mistakes. Good luck.
BTW I still have the stock system. Don't know what to do with it. I might chuck it soon. It's taking up space in my garage.

I had a local muffler shop install a dual pre-mandrel bent 2 1/2 inch tail pipe system set up for the Flowmaster muffler...he ordered the pipes out of a catalog....total cost for pipes and his labor was $200, I paid $40 for the 3 inch chrome tips and $79 for the Flowmaster SUV Performance 50 Series muffler.
The front of the muffler that mates up to the cat-back pipe was cut fairly smooth and still has room to clamp back on, but he did tell me overall, his tech wouldn't want to do another install like mine...even with the catalog ordered pipes, he had to get real creative to fit around the spare tire.

Message: Got mine off with ease. Just cut right behind the cat, undo all the hangers, and tug away. Stock exhaust is still in a buddies garage until i finish my new storage shed.
