Have any of you checked out the Consumer Review website? It has two Toyota models rated better than Dakota. No way! Check it out, the address is: http://www.carreview.com/reviews/pickup_trucks/index_byrating.shtml

I'm a firm believer that CR loves anything Japanese and has tunnel vision or blinders on when comparing those products to American made...I stopped reading them years ago.

Ok, I see this isn't Consumer Reports (where I still stick by my opinion of them) but Consumer Reviews from actual owners....one thing I noticed is that the older DAKs (ex: 1995) have lower ratings than the newer DAKS, throws the overall ratings of our new DAKS off, yet there are also some older ToYs in there to...

Also, did anyone see the issue of Truck Trend were they matched a Dakota RC R/T,Tacoma S-Runner,Chevy S-10 Extreme, and Nissan SC Frontier? The Tacoma won the 0-60 shootout with a 7.2 and the dakota came in with a 7.4. I was like what the crap? The dakota won the 1/4 mile with a 15.4 compared to the S-Runner's 15.6. The Chevy finished last in everything with a 9.0 0-60 and a 16.4 1/4 mile. The SC Frontier did ok with a 8.5 0-60 and a 16.0 1/4 mile. All 3 truck other than the R/T were extended cab. Now last year truck trend rated the 2000 Dakota RC R/T as a fast 6.5 0-60 and 15.0 1/4 mile. The R/T lost a full second 0-60 from 2000-2001? I just can't believe that! I think you just buy what you want and see for yourself what it will do. Magazines have never been truly fair.

This may shock you, but I've found consistant evidence from other places that says the same thing as consumer reports. The problem isn't that Dakotas are bad at all. The problem is that when someone hates a Dakota, they HATE the Dakota. So in a group of ratings that goes 5/5, 5/5, 4/5, 1/5, 4/5 for Dakotas score an 76%. Now take the Toyota no one expected much from it but they got more than they thought... so their ratings from the consumer go, 5/5, 3/5, 3/5, 4/5, 5/5. The Toyota scores 80% there... but it looks like in general there were MORE people LESS happy with the Toyota... it's those guys that really HATE Dakotas that give you wrong statistics involving automotive choices. Take a look for yourself sometime. here's dodge dakota reviews from an independant: http://www.carreview.com/reviews/pickup_trucks/product_526.shtml
Here's the link to the toyotas... they both scored better here too, but look why... some guy gave the dakota a 1 out of 5 because he flipped it over!!!

That's the tacoma. read the user responses, and then you'll realise why consumerreports rated toyotas higher... because consumers are often idiots! :) put as nicely as possible ;p

JD powers uses independant, random sampling of actual owners and repair records and they rate the Dakota high in initial quality and long term.

All i know is i had a 1996 toyota 4runner and the engine was way underpowered it was allways reved up to 3000 and in one year or 40000m the tranny was replaced and the head gasket broke. Both times the dealer did not want to fix it under the warrarnty because they said i took it of the paved road. I wend off roading in it but nothing big. Just fields in winter and a dirt road. I really didn't drive it hard. I told them about there comercials how there never on the road there just like well its not our problem so i dumped the truck of at the dodge dealer and drove away in a real truck.
