Took my 01 Dakota 4x4 Quad cab (37000 miles) to my mechanic to check out pulsating brake, ball joints and squeaking suspension. The rotors could not be turned and needed new ones. The rear drums had to be machined. The front and rear sway bars bushings had to cleaned and lubed. One ball joint needed replacement. I put high mileage on other make trucks and never had problems like these.

Sounds about right. Not only do you have to change the oil every 3,000 miles you have to replace the ball joints, tie rods, sway bar bushings and warped rotors. They should slap a Lada sticker on these POS's. This is embarassing for a front line automaker but par for the course for a crap merchant like Dodge.

Typical Dodge gives me the impression that he probably doesn't take that good a care of his vehicles, then bitches & whines 'cuz they break down. If you're too lazy to change your oil at 3000 miles or do any other type of maintenance on your vehicle, sell it & take the bus.
Loser.

"barfobits" -- How exactly do I perform proper maintenance on my rotors, balljoints, and bushings. I can't seem to find any grease fittings anywhere on this truck, so I'm wondering what exactly I have to do to my bushings and balljoints to get them to last more than 30,000 miles. And rotor maintenance -- that's a new one on me. I'm sure I could take them off and have them turned at every oil change, but should I really have to? Didn't have to do anything like that on my previous five trucks. Please offer your grand knowledge on maintenance up to the rest of us. Your help is greatly appreciated.

What you got here is a typical Mopar-head response. The chitty quality is obviously from your lack of proper care of your vehicle, which to a lot of these guys means spending every weekend dinking around with the POS's so they run almost normal. If you don't think spending lots of money every 5K miles on your truck even though you take just as good of care or better as you did with other makes, then you will get nothing but grief from this forum. I own a 2000 SLT w/ 3.9L and it has problem after problem and is very well maintained, the problem is it usually has to be maintained with the same crappy parts that came original, and guess what they go bad even quicker. That should tell you something. As soon as my wife and I can afford it our 2000 will be going down the road, or should I say at least being sold so it can become osomeone elses problem.

I agree. Dodge quality isnt the best. I had a problem with my truck. O2 sensors kept shorting out. First time was 100$ to tell me the lower sensors are bad. I took it home and replaced them. same problem. took it back they said oh sorry its the upper driver side so thats 400$. it had some fluid leaking and shorting it. they were telling me the tranny was leaking and the fluid was getting in the harness. So I dared ask what the cost was gonna be. 1700$ to replace the harness. I said screw that. Took it home and started looking. the fluid wasnt tranny, oil or coolant. so I looked at the power steering. the high speed line has a sensor on it. took it off and lo and behold the connector was full of PS fluid. the sensor developed a leak and the weather pack connector wouldnt allow the fluid to leak out so guess what it was sending it at high pressure through the wiring harness to the O2 sensor. replaced the sensor for 25$, got a new O2 sensor for 85$ and let the fluid drain for a week. havent had a problem since. What got me was even if they replaced the harness the problem would still be there. I went back to the dealer and spoke to the service manager. He was trying to sell me into a new dodge right there on the service drive floor. I said No way im ever gettign a dodge again. I got my 500$ back. I told him I wasnt even a dodge qualified mechanic, and I figured out the problem. Im sure the mechanic would of figured it out when he disconnected the harness but if he would of taken a little time to figure it out and fix it right instead of slapping another )2 sensor on. I had to replace my brake rotors and pads. My stock ones lasted 40 000 miles. I had them turned once and they lasted 10 000 miles then they coouldnt be turned again. I got a set of Raybestos pads and rotors and they are working fine so far. Oh the service manager told me he had 75% less problems with dodge products than 3 years ago. I love the way my truck looks, but ive had nothing but problems with this thing since 34000 miles. I wont be getting another dodge ever again. yeah Im biaching about it, but my last GMC had 140 000 ,miles before I started to replace radiators hoses alternators. I did rebuild the tranny at 160 000 but before that all I did was fluid and filter changes. my wifes son has it now with 340 000 miles on it and its still going strong.
When I do sell the dakota I will make sure it runs good and everything works jsut for my peace of mind but after you drive it away I wont guarantee anything
I dont blame anyone who just purchased a 25 000$ truck and theire having problems with it before the warranty is even up

Lets see. I got an 88 dakota with 350,000 miles on it and I just changed the last original belt on it this last spring. It still has the original hoses and thremo in it and the original drums. The rotors just got replaced and the drums will finally get replaced this coming spring. I promise that you will not find a truck anywhere that has been beat harder. With 2 tenths of a mile on it I grabed 3 outta 5 before I got out of the dodge parking lot with it. There has never been a day that it hasn't smoked the crap out of the tires and been hammered religously. Every 10,000 miles it does a 100 yard victory burn out. The motor has never been down except for a water pump @ 300,000. I didn't even change the oil on this truck till it had 10,000 miles on it. I once launched it 15 ft into the air jumping a bridge. I have had 3000lbs in the bed of this truck numerous times over the yrs. It has out lived out ran and out worked every ford, chevy, and toyota in the family over the last 16 yrs. I still have the truck and a 01. The 01 has 39,000 on it. The only problem with it so far was the gas cap went bad and turned on the mill light. My brothernlaw has a 00 4x4 with 55,000 on it and has had no problems at all. Hell he didn't do the brakes till he had 52,000 on it. My fater has a 98 and he has had only 2 problems with it.An anti lock brake senser went bad and the o2 sensor His truck has 45,000 on it. My father-n-law had an s-10. It was in the shop 9 times for major motor and tranny repair before it had 20,000 on it. He took it back and got a grand am to drive but told them he wasn't taking the truck home. Rotors today though are junk. They are usually though aways. Most people lease and not buy today. They cut corners where they can. I have a 97 Neon. The rotors on it are so cheap you are lucky that they make it threw a set of brakes. In defense of all auto makers All of them are cutting corners all of them are building cheaper and cheaper stuff and charging more for it.All of them make good ones and all of them make bad ones. As for myself I have had the best luck with chrysler products over the rest. My brother in law has good luck with all his cars regardless of make. All inall I'll make mine Dodge. I believe there trucks are tougher, stronger and last longer than the rest.

I love these lying Mopar fanatics. You guys make the Taliban look like boy scouts. I guess if your belts lasted 350,000 miles it's because of great Dodge engineering and quality construction? Get real you lying, idiotic piece of dog crap.

What makes Dodges poor quality more real than ever is when these lying hill billes crawl out of the wood work and spin lies like this piece of sh1t. Fcuk off and get real.

Must be 50 inch by 30 inch tires. With quad and exhaust. I got no rust and I drive it in saltwater and in the mountons, I got variable four wheel drive.

Maybe you two should check out the powertrain warranties between chevy, ford, and dodge and find out which company really stands for quality. I'll save you some time: Dodge has a longer warranty than Ford or Chevy. 7 years, 70000 miles. And since you two probably can't count any better than you can spell that equals a lot.

Are you saying Dodge is junk and gives a long warrranty so people will think they are a quality product.

hmmm has a point. This is the strategy used by manufactures after developing a reputation for poor quality. Hyundai is a perfect example. They got a reputation for being disposable cars. So to help turn things around, they began offering warranties far beyond what other manufacturers were offering. I'm not saying that this is what Dodge is doing, but it IS something to think about.
