Message: I dont know if any of you have tried this or if its a tip everybody knows about. Last night I changed my oil and did it a little after driving the truck a good bit. In the past when I try and remove the filter on my 93 w/5.2, I cant hang on because the filter is right under one of the exhaust manifolds and gets pretty hot. So last night, I stole an oven mit from the kitchen and wore it to take off the filter. It is now not useable for cookinh because its soaked with dirty oil but it helped out immensely in keeping my hand from getting burned and also minimized the amount of hot, dirty oil I got running down my arm.

Message: I heard oil that is pretty warm suspends more of the dirt and crap you want to get out when you change the oil. I am not talking red hot, but I often burn my knuckles on the manifold above the filter and I find the filter is a bit easier to handle when its pretty warm with the mits.

Message: It also flows much better, which helps save time when you are changing it.

Message: once the oil is hot the carbon that is in suspension should stay that way well past the the time the engine/oil cools to the point that you remove the filter without getting burned.if you really want to clean the oil system use a engine flush.

Message: Good tip. Soak the oven mit in a Baking Soda and soap mixture for a while and then wash it for next time. The stain won't come out but there won't be any oil residue in the fabric either.
