46,000 miles
Original brakes, front and rear, and original ball joints

I was getting my tire balanced and rotated, and while it was off the ground, I pulled and pushed on the top of the tire, it bent the tire some, shook the truck, but had no play noticable.

My brakes still stop well, I guess backing up at about 25mph, and slamming on the brakes(keeps rear brakes in adjustment), might work! I do have the 11in. rear drums.

I was almost shocked to see no play in my ball joints, go figure, don't know why.

Dont let that test fool you. I kept hearing a clunking noise on passenger side front only when i made left turns and hit bumps.I lifted my truck and shook the tire it didnt move either.I took it to the dealer where they told me nothing was wrong. The noise got worse i took it back then they told me it was the sway bar bushings. After they ordered them and i went back to have them installed they told me that they found a bad ball joint and that they have never seen one that bad with only 9500 miles on it. The mechanic told me that the reason he didnt find it before was it only moved when the wheel was turned to the left. I hope yours are alright.

Heard the same clunking noise last weekend while
driving on a bumpy dirt road. Took it in to my mechanic,
and found that ALL the ball joints, the pitman and idler
are FUBAR! Put a 3" suspension lift in a year ago, and
found out that I had 1 bad ball joint, and replaced it. Put
32" MT/R's on this summer, and they crapped out. My
point is this: IF YOU LIFT YOUR TRUCK, AND PUT ON
BIG TIRES, REPLACE ALL YOU BALLJOINTS WITH
TOP QUALITY ONES (MOOG), NOT THE CHEAP
ONES!!! I learned that the hard way!!

Remember, as another had posted on one of the many ball-joint posts, that the movement allowed before the joints are considered bad is 0.060". Yes, that is 6 hundreths of an inch, or less then 1/16 inch.

Think that you can feel that movement by shaking a tire? Be careful when you think you're good on the ball joints....

Thanks Guys,

I only hope they are still good. I don't have any clunking noises though. At about 40K, I had the front end aligned at a Goodyear in my area, they had the state of the art machine, even took it back once a few days later. I mentioned the ball joint problem with these trucks, and they said they thought they were fine. They said thats the first thing they check, cause the alignment will never be right otherwise.

Like I said, I was pulling pretty hard on the top of the tire, and could perceive no play. What else can I do? My family rides in my QC often, and I don't want a wheel to fall off!

The people at Goodyear did you right. Before an alignment it is imperitive to check (a) the ride height and (b) the condition of the ball joints.

Todd,

How did you fare with all the rain a few days ago?

Up North, we had it worse than when Allison came through.

It wastn't worse than Allison, but it was still pretty bad. Good thing my QC, never drove thru any high water.

I live in a suburb, (west Pearland), where it doesn't flood, and didn't have to be on any of the highways that did.

thanks for asking tho'

Todd

FYI,

Upper Ball Joint

DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING

Position a floor jack under the lower suspension arm. Raise the wheel and allow the tire to lightly contact the floor (vehicle weight relieved from the tire).
Mount a dial indicator solidly on the upper suspension arm.
Position the indicator plunger against the upper ball joint boss of the steering knuckle.
Grasp the top of the tire and apply force in and out. Look for movement at the ball joint between the upper suspension arm and steering knuckle.
If lateral movement is greater than 1.52 mm (0.060 inch) , replace upper suspension arm.

If you are referring to what Lurkin had posted (who by the way posted that ~4.5 YEARS ago), he said SIX hundredths of an inch, which is in fact EXACTLY equal to sixty thousandths. Any other incorrect corrections that you want to make?
