Message: I was thinking, why should we rotate tires? The tires turn the same amount in the front as they do in the back, hence they should get the same wear. I dont know of any car/truck that has the back tires turning without having the front ones turning as well. Right?

Message: You are right, BUT !
Your front tires do more than the back ones, they turn side to side and that increases the wear on the side of the tire more.
Look at the edges of your front tires after about 5k miles then look at your rears, you will find the front ones starting to round and the back ones will still be squired off.

Message: Back tires wear more than the front....Its just the nature of the vehicle. Unless you have a FWD then the front wear more than the back. Drive tires wear quicker

Message: Soooo...
Your tires wear at different rates. The speed and which tires wear faster depend on your style of driving, allignment, etc.
Rotating and rebalancing your tires will help to even out the wear.

Only if you routinely break the rear tires loose from the pavement (I have a stock V6 auto 3.55 gears 30" tires so this is not a problem for me ;-}.

Message: I have had numerous vehicles that I ran different size tires on front and rear (so no front-to-back rotation) and despite good alignment and proper balance the rears always lasted way longer than the fronts. Just ask Vette owners - the ones who aren't doing burnouts, that is.

Message: Your steering geometry is designed to change camber when you turn your front wheels, so they actually lean into the turn (think of how a motorcycle makes turns). This is why you get outer tread wear on the front and not on the rear (assuming same air pressure all around). Add to this the fact that a certain amount of "scrubbing" occurs any time you make a turn - especially when parking and other similar maneuvers.

Buck - If your brakes are functioning properly then stopping is equally hard on front and back. And unless you are spinning your drive wheels then starting isn't any harder (on rears) either.

On front wheel drive cars, yes.

Message: Both the back and the front tires wear down. Each one wears just a little different than the others, no? It doesn't matter really, which ones get it worse and fastest, the fact is: Tires wear a little different than the other tires, and to equalize the wear on each tire, you rotate them. You want them all to have the same wear all around so that you won't develop any problems with driving and handling on the road. Oh, and w/ a RWD, what is the order that you rotate? (the pattern)?

Message: They say radial tires can take a set, so I rotate front to back on the same side wether FWD or RWD. Stopping is actually tougher on the front tires - about 70% of your braking is done by the front.

Message: I used to drive a FWD and the fronts went to their opposite back side and the rear tires just went straight forward (same side). I was just wondering though. My tires on my truck are good still so I'll wait a while before changing them and once it gets more toward Jan. I'll go get some snow tires or somethin.

Message: I don't spin my tires and the rear tires wear much faster than the fronts. I rotate every three or four thousand and there is a definite difference. When I had front drive cars it was the opposite.

Message: does the fact that the front wieghs 1200 pounds more than the very light rear have anything to do with this of course the fronts take a worse beating than the rear especially in a pickup maybe a car not so much but a pickup I always rotate if for nothing else to eliminate flat spots from the wieght Thanks guys this was educational
