Subject: tires and gears? IP: Logged
Message: hey guys, this is a real tech. question. would putting smaller tires on (say 275/60/15 or 275/55/15, instead of 255/65/15) have the same affect as putting larger gear ratios in the rear differential (say 4.1 replacing 3.55)?
please, serios answers only.

Message: According to my calculations, the 255/65/15 and the 275/60/15 have the same sidewall height and overall diameter, so those two would be a wash as far as gearing goes. The 275/55/15 would be a shorter tire by a little over an inch, and would lower your gearing (higher numerical ratio), giving you better takeoff and higher rpm's at speed. I'm not sure by how much, though.

Message: 4lo.com has a tire size and gearing chart and gives you RPM. they also have the calculations to figure out. off the top of my head Id say youll be about 80 mabey 100 RPM higher at cruising rpm than with the stock sized tires. most vehicles will accept a 1-1 1/2 ( approximate) inch increase or decrease with no real RPM changes
