Subject: Good buy or not ? IP: Logged
Message: I am interested in buying a 1998 Dodge Dakota ext. cab 4x4 with 163 000km for $13 000 canadian.
The color is black and I can see no scratch marks, even the box looks very new.
Inside it has all the power options .. PW windows, airbags, CD player, cruise control and so on and it looks very nicely kept inside.
The price seems very reasonable to me but I have been told that 163,000km is way to much and that I should stay away from anything over 100,000km.
I never owned a truck before and I really love the Dodge Dakota but can't afford a new truck or anything more pricey that this one.
I am not planning on putting more than 20000km a year on it since it will be used as a second vehicle.
Will this be a good buy or should I look for something else.
Info on this truck at the dealer :

Thanks.

Message: Im not sure about the exchange rate but lets say its 11K US $. thats kinda high for a a truck with that mileage. You can pick up low mileage trucks really clean for 8-11K ( US $)
Hope this helps

Message: If Rob's exchange calculations are correct, then I would say keep looking. I plan on selling mine soon. It's a '98 4x4 ext cab 5.2 manual tranny with under 60k miles and if I were to sell it today, I would probably take $11k for it. That's too many miles for the price. Odds are, it won't last much longer and when you're ready for another truck, it will be hard to get anything back for a Dakota with 200k miles.

Yes it works out to +- $9500US and the price is good if you look at the truck but I just don't know how much problems I will have with an engine that has 163 000 km on it.
If it was a car I would not even consider it even if the price was $1000 but I have no idea how strong the Dakota engine is and how many kilometers it can take before starting to give serious problems.

Message: You have approx 97,800 miles on it.
Which engine does it have? Has it been maintained as well as the body? The reason I ask is the 318 can run just about forever. I am still going strong with 150k and there are many others in the same boat.
The 3.9 is going to wear faster because it must work harder with less cyls.
If you are looking at a 4cyl... pass it up. The truck is too heavy for that engine.
At 100,000 miles, your truck will loose value very fast as it becomes harder to finance it.

Message: I know of a '97 dak 3.9 six in it with 247,000 miles on it and it is still runnin strong.
"The 3.9 is going to wear faster because it must work harder with less cyls."
whatta line of crap. 2000 rpm at 67 mph, the same inna 6 or an 8 no "work harder" about it. only if you are getting more "horsepower per cylinder" which by the way is 29.166 in the six and 28.125 in the 318, if by that you mean that the 6 works harder I disagree, 1.041 hp. per cylinder is nothing, from one 6 hp lawnmower engine to another 6 hp lawnmower engine, due to production tolerences vary almost that much. Due to a shorter crankshaft in the V6 it tends to last longer because the dynamic force on it is less then it would be with more cylinders and a longer over all length. next time you wanna talk about engineering factors, getta degree.

Message: I'm happy that your friend's 3.9 is still running strong at 247k. I hope my engine lasts that long.
Can you explain your thoughts in regards to torque?

Message: I just tore apart a 3.9 that has 150k on it. No groves in the cylinders. Hone it for new rings and such and it looks brand new. The 3.9 I have now has 200k on it, still runs strong. Just the tranny tends to mess up sometimes from 1st to 2nd when floored?
