Subject: fixxed the noisy rear disc brakes!

Ever since my truck was new 5 months ago the rear disc brakes have made a ~hum~ sound when I back up. I hate it and it's embaressing on a brand new truck.

So 5 months later I've finally jacked the pig up and did something about it.

I put it in gear to spin the rotors and then buff the rotors slightly with a rotory sander.

This takes the "GLAZED" look off and stops the noise.
I've known and done this trick years ago but never had to do it to mine before.

I also bought some "Sil-Glyde" and applied it to all moving parts and the back of the pads.

The gawd dang noise is finally gone!

I've got more pics on my site if you want to see them. Just click on my signature below.

I checked out your page the other day and have to say I enjoyed it. Your pics could be a little better quality wise, but the info and projects you've done are definitely worth reading. Good stuff man. And yes, that damn groaning from the rear when backing out of a parking space IS embarrasing.

Thanks Justi.

Ever since I got my digital camera stolen I've been just using my video camera and capturing it with software. It's actually faster that way for me but sometimes my pics come out great, sometimes they come out slightly blurry.

All in all I hope my pics help. 99% of the tips I looked for on here have no pics at all. I take pics of everything. It's kind of my scrap book for myself and to share with others.

I agree with ya boss. Pics make all the difference and yours certainly help. Good stuff no doubt man. You take it one step further, you not only do the mods, but then you use em! Loved the pics of the ATV's...

I have the "groaning" problem too. Is that what this got rid of? The groaning sound as you lightly take pressure off the brake pedal while in gear?

I went to the Stealer about this and he said it's a Dodge thing. I had him prove it to me on other new Dakotas and Durangos. All four we checked made this groaning noise so they will do nothing about it. This is just not right for a new vehicle to make this kind of noise.

I worked in a shop like 10 years ago. When a customer complained about the hum on disk brakes we would touch up the rotors with the rotory and a round sanding disk. This time I didn't have the same disk we used to use, but it still did the trick. I just drove my truck from Phoenix to the dunes outside of Yuma and never heard the sound at all now. I'm sure if you don't have a high speed neumatic rotory tool you can probably just buy one of those smaller rubber attachments for your electric drill and use the stick on sand paper. Just get fine grit tho and do it back and forth as you let the rotor turn while in gear. You have to remove the brake pads to do this (two bolts) and make sure you chaulk the front wheels before doing this as well.

Oh yeah. Here's where I just got back from. These pics were taken earlier today by me. This is in Ogilby. The specks on top of the hill are people on Quads. That shows you the size of them hills once you get back in there. There's a sh*t load of sand there. And sand gets into everything LOL!

Hey Graphite, did scuffing the rear disks resolved the rear disk groaning forever or did the groaning come back after the disks polished up again?

I bought an 03 tonight and my wife drop me off so I could get the truck. Hell, you should have seen the look on her face when I backed the truck up,,, kind of like, you paid $16K for that POS. LOL

Anyone else have the magic cure for the rear disks groaning?
