Message: I figured you had already made up your mind if you're deciding what engine and gearing you wanted. I don't really hate my Dakota, I'm just extremely disappointed in it. I love the V-8 in a smaller truck, and it looks great. If I had it to do over again, though, I would have gotten the Tundra. Watch the ball joints, the transfer case, and the passenger side for water from under the dash. Also, mine developed an annoying high-pitched squeak that still comes back sometimes. Nobody has figured out that one yet.
Oh, and you asked why someone would buy a car with 200k miles? I thought it was ridiculous too. Personally, I wouldn't want to buy anything with over 100k. People do buy the Toyotas with very high mileage because they will last a lot longer. I've denied it long enough, there is too much evidence that supports the reliability of a Toyota and Nissan is right behind them.

Message: If you are looking for reliability, go get something else. When i ordered mine I was looking for the best power/weight on the market and i am happy about it. The ball junks alone should not make you change your mind. Buy some extended warranty (service contractors from Crysler) that covers you up to 75K or 100K on the majority of sistems and let then do all the replacements for free. My truck has 75K and they replaced upper and lower C arms and ball junks twice on each side. On january 5th, they will replace the differencial. After that, i will be on my own, and the next balls will be moog ones. That will fix it. That extra warranty costs around 1000 dollars but it will save you thousands. Each of my front suspencion job,was worth a good 1500 dollars. Now, i garantee that before 75K you will have A/C problems, fan clutch problem and possibly differencial too.

Message: Yeah, the reliability is horrible. My 2001 has 48,000 miles on it and has had the upper control arms replaced (warranty) the brake pads &rotors (I did them at 30K) and I just did the rear shocks.
I've never missed a day and it's never been in the shop for more than 8 hours. With a horrible reliability record like this I don't think I will ever buy another Dodge again.

Message: I can say this about online fan sites such as this one. GENERALLY, you only have two types of people that use them. All out whores of the product that LOVE their X, in this case Dakota. And people that have problems so they go online to research/complain about their problems.
Not that this is necessarily bad, but it means you have to take most oracles that you find on these sites with a relative grain of salt. People that are simply content with their purchase and have no complaints, nor an infatuation with their truck, don't surf to these sites GENERALLY.
There are a few common problems with the Dakotas, i.e. the balljoints, but otherwise there are a lot of hit or miss problems that are amplified here by the sheer amount of people that come here looking for a solution to that problem. Just remember that what you read here is not NECESSARILY a porportionate representation of ALL Dakota owners.
That said, there is some down right excellent information to be found here, I learn new things every day without exception. I love my truck (03 SLT+ 4x4 QC with the 4.7L/auto tranny)and haven't had problems yet. But I will, as anything man made is destined to, and when I do, I KNOW I will find a reference to that problem here. I appreciate this site and it's users for that simple reason. But you can't get worried about every complaint you see listed here because there's a good chance you'll never experience it, and if you get worried about all of them you will NEVER enjoy your truck. That doesn't mean to ignore the posts, simply browse and keep it in mind to check for yourself later or maybe keep an eye out for it. Use the site as the information sharing portal it is and ignore the extreme pro and extreme con posts and pay attention to everything in between. :)
Enjoy!

Message: DON'T DO IT
I have a 2000 extended cab 4x4 with 4.7 auto.
The wost problem I've had is bad u-joints on the drive shaft. I bought it because I worked for DaimlerChrysler at the time.
I will not go back to a company that tries to force you to buy parts and fluids only from them.

Message: It's a good truck, Wolfy. Watch your ball joints, especially up until the warranty expires, and you'll be fine.
To STS - if you don't mind my asking, how much did you pay for that 142K truck?
Reason I ask: my '97 V8 SLT CC 4x4 also has 142K, is in very good shape and I'm trying to unload it as a trade for an '04. Curious to see how badly I should expect a dealer to roll me on trade-in value. Edmunds says ~$5200, but once dealers start talking about 'real money', I figure my Edmunds printout is officially worthless on their lot.
