Subject: Stereo Installation Nightmare IP: Logged
Message: I have two problems...hopefully someone has gone through this before.
1. I have a 97 Dakota. Bought a new stereo for it but when I got it "hooked up", there was power, but no sound. There were two extra wires when I was done, one blue (labeled power antenna) and one yellow (labeled mute). There was also the AMP connection that I hadn't connected.
2. To further complicate the situation, I had a "stereo installation guy" try to help me out. Said that there was no power going to the amp so he had me splice the AMP connection and hook it into the Yellow "power" wire. We got a spark...now I have no power to the stereo, no interior lights (dome or dash), and NO STEREO! The fuse wasn't blown but another "car stero guy" told me that there is power getting to my fuse box, but no power leaving that fuse terminal.
Anyone gone through this or know what I can do?
Please help!!

Message: To fix the interior lights and everything you need to replace the relay in the fuse box inside the engine compartment. Once you fix that your interior will be back to normal.
As for the stereo, go to Circuit City, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, etc. and get replacement wiring plugs so your not cutting any wirings, just hook it up to the stereo and plug it into the plugs that are already there. Shouldn't be very complicated.
Hope this helps

Message: Yeah, there's another fuse under the hood that may have blown. Found that out with my other dak. It's really not labeled as what it should, but if you can't find it, check every fuse. If that doesn't work, see if you blew the fuse in the back of the stereo.
As for the amp and power wires, you shouldn't splice the two together. I am assuming from your post that you are running an amp. If you are, you will need power and ground to the amp, of course. Then run the amp connection from the head unit to the remote power connection of the amp. The mute wire is for a hook up to a cell phone so the stereo mutes when you get a call. The power antenna is what is says, but can also be used as a remote turn on lead for the amp. You'll be leaving them both unhooked if you use the amp wire. Just tape up the loose wires and make sure no copper is showing to prevent them from shorting to the chassis.
Let me know if any of this helps.

Message: the power antena is to tell power antenas to go up and down when the stereo is on. the amp wire is to tell the external amp to turn on and off. i don't know what the mute wire does.
