Subject: Dakota Problem IP: Logged
Message: Hi, I have a 1998 dakota sport with a 3.9 L engine, and an automatic trans. The truck only has about 60,000 miles, but when i get up around 90 mph the truck shifts down a gear, and then immediatley shifts back up one. It usually does this until i drop the speed down to about 70. It hasnt screwed my truck up yet, but i am concerned it might in the future. Does anybody know what could be causing this to happen? Any information would be a great help. Thanks!

Message: Unless you're at a track, no reason to be doing 90mph. But anyway that sounds dangerous. Slow down and have a shop check it out.

Message: Could that just be the top speed limiter??? I am unsure how it works, never hit it. But isn't it set for 93mph or so?
Hope this helps

Message: hey man. let me describe this to you and you can see if it sounds similar. My 95 dakota was about the same way. I also had the 3.9. my truck would hold a gear too long and then slam into gear. it would also drop down a gear when I would take turns. So I checked my trans. fluid and it was low. I also had a small trans. leak. I dont know for sure what your problem might be but I do know that dodge has not of yet put any product on a truck that would limit the speed or cause it to drop a gear at such a high speed. anyways I ended up changing the trans filter and fluid and I had to put a couple new o rings on the transmission. that completely fixed my problem. I never had any more slips or downshifts. Hope it works bro. peace.

I've notice when I floor my throtle the transmission seems to be a bit lost where to shift. Geer hunting seems to regular on this model truck. I gess most mechanical auto's are like that.

Message: I don't think it's your speed limiter.it sounds like It's just downshifting out of overdrive to 3rd gear. Do you have the original size tires? If not, your final drive ratio has been changed, and the transmission is trying to compensate.

Message: ok i have a 90 4x4 with the crappy 3.9 and mine will do the same thing around 120 kph {canadian} now with my mechanical background i finally decided that the engine is so bagged out/under powered that you need the gas pedal so far down asking for power that the tranny thinks it should shift down and when it does the rpm is too high for the highway speed so shifts up and down and up ...... i also notice that my heater vents which are vaccum operated will not change when i switch them at highway speeds until i take my foot off the gas thus creating more engine vaccum
now the way im going to fix my problem............5.2 liter magnum MPI
i feel very sorry for anyone having the dakota with the 4 cyl eeesh under powered yea
hope i didnt create more questions than answers

Message: no sorry as far as i know only swathers and concreete cutters use v4 air cooled.........
i said 4 cyl because i some of the earliest dakotas came with a inline 4 cyl was either a 2.2 or2.4 liter. all i was sayin is if we are under powered with a 6 cyl 3.9 a dak with a 2.2 or2.4 4 cyl would be terribly under powered

Message: yes. jd is correct. basically you are at top speed!! With the throttle pushed so far trying to creat more power, your truck is fighting wind resistence among everything else.that's just as fast as it will go.....GM had this same problem in the late 80's camaro's and firebirds, with the trans. wanting to downshift at high speed (95+) There is nothing you can do about it...sorry

Message: it is not the trucks absolute top speed.
it is the absolute top speed with the tranny in overdrive with the torque converter locked up without lugging....
next your truck gives trouble pay some attn to how far you got the go pedal pressed down.....youl probably find that it is as far down as if you acually wanted it to down shift say, to pass someone
ps try your heater controls cruising at a steady highway speeds if they are slow or do not change till you pull your foot out a the gas, your engine IS wore out
good luck and like i said before 5.2 liter
just thinka tha fun

Message: Ya I know on the GM 700r4 there was an aftermarket modification you could do inside the tranny to prevent downshifting at high speeds-not available for Dodge's though.
