 Subject: dip stick reading

on my '91 5.2L CC 4x4, when i pull the dip stick to check the level on side is lower than the other. what side do i read for the right level? and why is it like that? thanks guys.

HOw much lower are we talking about here? Could it be angled THAT much? Sure you're wiping it off and sticking it back in? (that's what she said)

ya, im wiping it off. and id say its about a 3/8 of a inch difference.

I have the seen the same thing on my 4.7L. I always go by the lowest point. The only thing I can think of is somehow oil is being picked up from the dip stick tube when you pull it out.
The thing that bothers me is when you change the oil, it is so clean, it's hard to see. I've been thinking of drilling small holes in the dip stick (similar to the antifreeze resevoir). Has anyone else tried this?

hey im a mechanic and have done a tone of oil changes go by the average of the two readings..... and yes small holes in the crossthach area of your dipstick will make it eiser to read...its been done factory and is handy
one other thing dont fret about a .5 inch variance in oil level its not gonna cook your engine
its alll good
