Message: I have seen a lot of discussion pro and con on different liner systems on this set of forums and the DML. I chose the drop in liner over the spray in because I believe you have more impact resistance with it. Spray-on liners have better metal corrosion protection I think. There are multiple brands of both options. I went with the factory liner, below rail, because I wanted to assure good quality and have access to the tie downs. The below rail was needed so that I could install my Pace-Edwards cover. Relationship to the rail for you depends on what else you are doing to the truck. I am pleased with my choice thus far.

Message: If you go with a drop in liner, your bed will be rusted out in a couple of years. The drop ins rub all the paint off the bed and get it down to bare metal, then they trap water inbetween the liner and the bed. I have a 98 and it had a dropin when I bought it. so in two years there were large spots with no paint just bare metal. My wife's sister has a 92 with a drop in and her bed has rusted completley through in several spots. Go with a spray in, I choose line-x becuase its nice looking and will prevent load shifts. The line-x dealor I went to will guarentee it for life and fix any damage to it. Go above rail because that where a lot of scratches will happen.

Message: I agree with about the rubbing and moisture traping problems of drop in liners. My dad has a drop in and it has rubed some paint away and some rust started to form. We fixed this problem by lightly sanding the surface rust away and cleaning the bed. We then applied the Hercu Liner Roll on bed liner and once it dried we put his drop in liner back in. I liked this self applied paint on liner so much I did my dodge the next week. The best part is that when I put a drop in liner in; the paint on liner will protect my box from the rubbing and moisture build up. P.S. I only payed $79.00 for the Herculiner system at Sam's Club and so far everyone who has seen it thinks it was a sprayin job. They are all shocked when I tell them I did it myself.

Message: I would still go with a line-x system The drop ins take up extra space. Ask your self what would you be hauling? Would there be anything that would shift arround enough to dent the back. The line-x system will prevent most load shifts. Also my line-x dealor will fix any damage for life. Figure the dropin costs $200 to $250 if you spend another $79 on a rollon thats $329. I paid $340 for over the rail line-x. It looks awsome.
Also check this out:
Quantico, VA. (May 11, 2001) - Line-X was the only product, in the group of 27 coatings selected, to pass ALL tests. Recently this was demonstrated at the annual Force Protection Demonstration at Quantico Marine Corps Base. Over one thousand high level military and other official dignitaries witnessed the demonstration.
The Air Force Research lab, during a previous test, found that it took at least 1,000 pounds equivalent of TNT to "make Line-X fail and even then it only tore the coating... fragmentation was still averted." "Line-X could save lives if applied to buildings subjected to bomb force."

Message: So far I have spent $79.00 total for my bed protection. I can touch up any area that ever gets dammaged because the kit gives and extra can for any future touch up. Mine is also above the rail. I have not had anything slide around yet. I would like to check out that report on all of those caoting that where test and what the test included. Could you please post the link.I could afford $79.00 I could not afford $340.00. P.S. I dont often blow my trucks up and if some one does blow my truck up the condition of my bed is the least of my worry's.

Message: I thought about the water under the liner and with a cover I don't expect corrosion to be much of a problem. Also, the bed seems to be of a lighter gauge metal than my 24 year old Chev. and I do haul things like cement blocks etc for various projects. So, it was said correctly, think about the application before you buy. One downside to the drop ins........don't fuel containers in the back of the truck. They build up enough static electricity to spark an explosion. Set containers on the ground and then fuel. I don't know if the spray-ons have that hazard.

Message: I use the Pendaliner S/R (same liner as factory
but says penda instead of DODGE).Under the liner
the dealer I bought it from had a 1/4" foam rubber pad that was made to fit under the liner
and on the wheel wells to keep the liner from scratching the bed. if you are putting a cover
on the bed water getting under the liner is not
really a problem.getting the under rail liner
is a better choice if you are going to put a cover on it makes for a better fit
