Subject: Cruise control question IP: Logged
Message: Can anyone help troubleshoot a problem with my 2000 SLT cruise control? It doesn't have power to the switches in the sterring wheel. I've heard there may be a recall for some kind of contactor in the steering column. Also is it safe to remove the airbag if I unplug it ?

Message: I wouldnt even mess with that air bag. Have someone do it who knows how. Those things are dangerous. Im sure you checked the fuse and the next thing I would check would be the connections to the servo unit under the hood. Located on the fire wall. If the vacum line is cracked it will not function. Other than that check with the dealer on any recalls. Hope this helps.

Message: Dakota 1,
Steve is spot on-don'tr mess. There was a recall, and I believe it included the cruise control. If you try to deal with it yourself and fail, you may not be able to have the problem resolved by the dealer under recall. Let the pros take care of it!!
As far as the airbag, DO NOT TOUCH!! From what I've read recently, there is a deadly toxic material in the airbag that, when activated, forms a non-toxic inflation gas. In the 'ready-to-function' state, it is a vicious mean substance that will kill you very dead very fast.
Some things are better left to those properly trained.

Message: The recall was for the clockspring which would affect the cruise control switches

Message: You can safely work on your own dash and steering column without worrying about deploying the air bag. PROVIDED you follow the simple instructions in the service manual. Do you think the guy working in the dealership is any smarter than you are? I doubt it. Most of the factory techs I know aren't any smarter (or dumber) than I am. What makes them different? They read the manual.
Does the air bag contain toxic chemicals? Yes, sodium azide. But it's tightly sealed. You would have to attack the chemical package itself with a sharp object to come in contact with it. If you do that, maybe you're too stupid to live :)
As for your cruise control, the recall was for the clock spring that kept breaking. There were other symptoms that went along with that, not just no power to the buttons. If it's still under warrenty, take it in and have it fixed. If it's not under warrenty, buy a service manual and fix it yourself. The factory manual is pretty good about supplying diagnostic procedures.
Yes the manual is expensive. But when stuff doesn't work it's worth every penny.
