Subject: DC sold the 5.9 short! IP: Logged
Message: All it would have taken is a little coil on plug here, a little intake there, maybe tweak the fuel management, etc. and it would be right there with anyones engine! Granted, I only have 6000 on my 4x4 QC but I can tell you it is real sweet! Torques up every hill I can find at 55 or less without shifting out of OD. Mine came with only one cat, I don't know if that helps or not. Oh yeh, and it has never pinged, although it was never hotter than the high 80s this past summer!

Message: Yeah, but if they did that they wouldn't be able to control the market and make most of the money from aftermarket parts. They got a taste of this with Magnum heads and intakes. That control will lapse soon. What better reason to end the line and start anew. It sucks, but that's the corporate mentality.

Message: What the fcuk are you on about? There is no way in hell the 5.9 would be able to meet stricter emission and fuel economy regulations so it got axed. That motor has been around for 32 years, don't you think it's time they tried to at least appear to want to compete with Ford and GM in the engine compartment? If you hadn't bothered to look, Ford and GM are doing some awesome things with their development engines especially Ford.
It has nothing to do with the aftermarket, which is, if you didn't know, nearly non-existent anyway.

If you botherd too noticed. The last R/T Dakota had a rating of 300 HP and produced more toruqe than the wanna be Hemi!! Try 390 pound of toruqe and at 3000 RPMS.. Also I would like to point out, that the Carb 2bbl 360 you seen in your dads Dodge Power-Wagon isn't the same make up as the one found in the Ram pickup with a Electronic S.F.I./Same size, just built defferntly over years. I think they refined the engine back in '93 and installed a Low Emission computer system in '98.

Message: Hey Huh! Are you totally stupid? The Hemi design is documented to 1912. Chrysler has been involved in Hemis since the early 50's. So much for the 32 year old 5.9. Oh, and, by the way, the Hemi is more difficult to run clean with the dome-shaped head, and somehow they managed to clean it up. Go figure.

samtheman, no argument
Jibbe Jabber, what are you on? A stock r/t with 300hp, and 390ft/lbs @ 3000rpm? I must have missed that one.
Folks, the 250/240 rating comes from DC, for engines they built in the same year. Funny, how every time a stock 5.9, and 4.7 is dynoed, they don't have a 10hp difference, usually NONE. Unless they tweak that torque management system on the 5.7, it's not that great when you get on it.
And please, spare me the aftermarket song and dance for the 5.9 vs the 4.7. As a 4.7, 2001 owner, I'm well aware of it, just not disappointed relative to how well my 4.7 runs.
I'm not knocking the 5.9, and it wasn't my decision to get rid of it, and yes, it has more low end torque than a 4.7 does.
samtheman,
Funny though, my QC doesn't downshift even on the biggest hills, unless of course I push the clutch in, and go from 5th to 4th, etc. :)

Message: DC knew the marketable life of the 5.9 was over when the 5.7 came along. I kept track of a couple of 2003 R/T's that sat on the respective dealer lots for 11 months before they were sold. I believe the gas mileage reputation hurt the 5.9 more than anything.

Message: I would like to have seen a H.O 4.7 take over in the R/T package. I loved my R/T with the mods, but the gas mileage was killer.

Message: Would would get about the same in the city regardless of what powertrain option.
The 360 also was remodifed back in 93 when they replaced the TBI system with the MPFI and the SFI.
Truck Trend did print a artical about the last R/T Dakota. I even posted about that one on the performance board.
