 Subject: GEN I, II, III ???

I keep seeing people referring to Generation 1, 2 and 3 Dakota's. I can only think of 2 body styles for the Dakota, and looking at the pictures in the photo albums looks like there are only 2 body styles. Where does the Gen III fit in? What years differentiate the different versions? Or was it a major mechanical change with in the same body style? Thanks.

years 87 to 91 are Gen 1 diff front end
92 to 92 are Gen 2 Aerodynamic front end
97 to present are Gen 3 Updated Ram Looks

87 through 91 are Considered Gen 1, 92 Through 96 are Gen 2, and 97 through 2004 are considered Gen 3. The pics are in order of Generations. Hopefully this Helps

Gen1, also known as "Old Flatnose" and Gen2 are different only minimally in overall body style. The "aero" nose was done primarily to allow enough room for a V8 engine and belt-drive fan assembly.

The Gen IIs in good shape will fetch more than that. They hold their values pretty well.
How much did they go for new? I bought mine used and have always been curious.

I bought mine on August 28, 1996 with 31k miles on it for $10,000 from Johnson Dodge in NJ. The sticker price was $11,995 I think.

Like that pic of the gen 1! Even the Shelby model is a favorite of mine. I own a Gen II but would buy one of those earlier models if the finances allowed...

The 1991's had the new front end, so that was the start of GenII. My first Dak was a new 1992 5.2 RC 3:55 auto, Electric Blue. 8 1/2 years/ 217K until totalled in '01.

Hey Mark,New to this site, just started look/lurking in the last couple days. Also new to Daks, just bought a '92 Sport a month or so ago. Wanted to ask about your hood? Is it aftermarket, and would you mind telling me what manufacturer? Really looks good!

Yep its a fiberglass hood from AAR. I just got it this summer and painted it on my front lawn. Hahah surprisingly no neighbors complained from the clouds of cyanide laced urethane overspray.

Hey Mark,Thanks for the info and link! I'll give them a shout. Any idea where a pair of headlight assemblies can be picked up at a reasonable price. Mine are a "little yellowed" and "fogged." Like I said, just picked up a '92 Sport 4X4 5.2 Auto and starting to do some "mods" to it. Body solid and pretty good shape for a '92 and former owner did a few mods to engine and exhaust. I'm going to do a few more.

Thats not too far away from what I have. No 4x4 here though. Its a great truck. Verrry easy to mess with and maintain. I have the same thing slightly with my headlights. I might like to replace mine too if they arent too expensive. I think I paid $40 or so for the side and bottom clear assemblies up front. My goal was to get everything green, black and white/silver... I cant do anything about the yellow tags though. If you find somewhere that has the headlights give me a shout.

Mother's Aluminum Polish works on the headlights. It probably won't do anything for the yellowing, but all the little pits and scrapes in the plastic are removed and you will be shocked how bright your headlights become.

I just bought a '95 for $3200. Only has 87,000 miles on it. V6, 5 spd, Sport Model. Dealer was asking 3995 for it.
