Subject: Clutch issues. IP: Logged
Message: Hello everyone, I havnt posted in awhile but have a quick question for the techies out there.
Yesterday I was parking my 2001 Dakota 3.9 4x4 and it knicked a curb with the tire, no bid deal happens all the time. Except this time when it hit i guess the resistance put too much pressure on the driveline cause the clutch pedal went straight to the floor.
After some pumping the pedal got rock hard and wouldnt move any more. One more pump and something snapped and now there is a very bad noise. With the engine running and you press the clutch in it feels like sticking a stick into a moving fan.
After I took the skid plate down to further examine everything im finding pieces of bearing laying around. So im guessing this is the throw out bearing but what im wondering is if thats all it is? Or do you think im looking at a whole new clutch?
Thanks in advance.

Message: how many miles? your probably lookin' at a collapsed pressure plate besides the TO. depending on mileage, you might want to change all 3.

Message: From what I remember, clutches arent that very expensive. Just hard to get too. If it were the throw out bearing that puked it would be in your best interest to go ahead and change the clutch plate and pressure plate out. I know it's a pain, but saves you some work in the long run.

Message: i doubt sand could have gotten in there. possibly just a faulty TO bearing. do you have the 7/70 plan? maybe it's covered?

Message: My 2002's clutch only made it to like 15k before it started sticking and acting up. I'm not surprised that it failed so soon. The clutch controller, hydraulic, failed long before that.

Message: Any good places to get a new clutch? Cant seem to find a descent site with our trucks. I see that some of you like the centerforce but where do you get them from? Thanks again.

Message: I got my centerforce clutch and T/O bearing from Summit. Just look up the part number on centerforce's website and plug that into the part search on Summit's site.

Message: Well I got the transmission down over the past weekend and my thoughts were confirmed. I found the TOB torn apart in just about every way possible. Everything else appears to be in order but I am unable to take the clutch and pressure plate down because I dont have the alignment tool to put them back up.
Anyone have any ideas on how to test the clutch and pressure plate without the transmission on? I cant seem to think of any way of doing this.
Thanks for the help.

Message: no, there is no way to check them without the trans. you should be able to get a loaner pilot tool from A/Z. i'd pull them and check for heat marks or any unusual wear.

Message: Andy,
T/O Bearing Part# CTF-N1764 $36.69
That part # you gave me is only good up to a 99 but Im thinking its good for a 2001. Are you sure that it will work cause the people at summit and at centerforce are not sure. Id be greatful if you could confirm anything for me.

Message: I'm not for sure or not on the 3.9L. And I'm really suprised that centerforce didn't know since that is the part # they have for the 3.9L on their website. Even though it's 2001 it shouldn't make any difference I imagine. But if you want to be absolutely sure you could always get it from the dealer. Or order both from Summitt and the dealer and send back the one that doesn't match the one off your truck.
