Subject: rearend pinion seal leaking IP: Logged
Message: Has anyone else had a problem with the rearend's pinion seal leaking? I am at 108K on a 00 CC Dak and noticed the bottom of the gear housing has oil on it, not dripping wet just discolored.
I had to replace my driveshaft last year and went round and round with the drive line shop because the frigggin steel shaft they built vibrated like hell at 70MPH. They balanced the thing 5-6 times and each time they said it was perfect. Finally, I paid another shop $250 to build an aluminum shaft, WOW no more vibration!
Just curious if the bad drive line took out the pinion seal/bearing, or if this is another one of Dodges FURARed ball joint, front rotor type of things.

Message: My '01's seal is leaking at 65K. I'm not sure, but one contributing factor could have been when I put on 2" drop hangers. The driveline angle was so severe, I had a major vibration. The 5-spd shift lever shook like crazy. ASAP I put on 2" lowering blocks with pinion angle slant; no more vibration. A new seal is about $9. I'm waiting on IAS shocks to do at the same time.

Message: I have had this happen several times on my 2000.I have 1 inch blocks on the rear and also I have had trouble with the 9 1/4 rear end. I had to replace all the bearings at 40000 miles, had the worse howl.I will tell you that after fixing the rearend and the seals at the pinion leaking it was that I didn't get the pinion preload set right.Your problem could be either the pinion preload is off or pinion angle is out.

Message: I am running a stock suspension. Both of the driveline shops that worked on the truck checked the driveline angle. I think there was 1-2 degrees of angle between the tranny and driveshaft and 1-2 degrees between the driveshaft and the rearend, enough to allow the U-joints to work the grease around. I put synthetic gear lube in it about 25K ago in hopes that I wouldn't have problems with the rearend. Guess I didn't do the synthetic gear lube early enough or the poorly balanced driveshaft took it's toll on the pinion bearing.

Message: Oh yeah, has anyone replaced just the pinion seal? I have rebuilt engines and trannys before but have never replaced the gears of a rearend. Can you pull the yoke off of the pinion gear and pop out the pinion seal or is the seal in there so deep that the gears have to come out?

Message: Yea my pinion seal is leaking too. It might have something to do with the hothckis leafs and 1" block with no pinion shims. I've got shims that will be going in soon but I'd also like to know how easy it is to change the seal.
