Subject: Race with Mustang GT IP: Logged
Message: Last night I had a run in with a brand new Mustang GT. I was minding my own business driving down the highway when this person flew by me at a high rate of speed. This got my attention and put a big smile on my face which got even larger when we both came to a traffic light a bit down the road. He stayed right behind my rear wheels to see if I was going to play or not when the light turned green. I figured I'd go for it. He took me quickly off the line because of my wheelspin. He pulled away up to about 50mph. After that we both pretty much matched speeds all the way to about 105. He braked at that point and was about 40-50 feet in front of my bumper. I did some calculations to find out speed in feet per second. At 100mph that is 146 feet per second. If his nose was 65 feet in front of mine then that puts us less than a half second apart in the quarter mile. I found some specs on a 2003 mustang. 14.09 Does that sound about right?

Message: You lost, what are you trying to factor? Einstein could not take your corrupt data and make any sense with it. You are trying to use the "CHAOS" theory and apply it to imperfect data. I was 4 ars back, thats 140 inches per second. What kind of Bull Crap is that?

Message: since I have never been to the track I have NO CLUE what my time woudl be. I can look up stock data on a mustang. We were close enough to calculate how much time I was behind by. I guess it just brought me back to the horrible days when I was in engineering school. 100mph is simply converted to 146.7 feet per second. If I was 65 feet behind him then that would be less than a half second. According to data:
Ford Mustang GT
0-60 MPH 5.4
1/4 Mile 14.0@100.2
My method is a good approximation. I will only know for sure once I hit the track though.

Next spring I might start to do some real engine mods. I'm debating that or to get a new 360 from KRC Performance.

Message: Mark, you may have heard about the Mopar Action magazine comparison in 1993 with a 6-spd/275hp Trans-Am, 5-spd/215hp GT, and 3:92auto/5.2 Dak. The Dak ran 14.9 1/4 bone stock, the GT never got out of the 15's. With only a MP Computer and K&N drop-in, the Dak ran 14.4, and lost to the Trans-Am by one length. '92 and '93 GenII's were awesome "sleepers". &..Thanks for starting this site, Mark.

Message: Hey.. Very inspiring post thanks. I never read that article. My estimation is pretty close then of being in the mid fourteens, or one half second behind the new mustang's 14.0 stock time. That is assuming the guys car was stock. I kinda just got lucky by picking up my '93. I knew nothing about trucks when I got it. I just knew I wanted the V8.
I'm glad you enjoy the site. Thanks again.

Message: I dont think that matching up the quarter mile time with a difference of 65 feet matches up, because you guys didnt run a quarter mile. But if my math and physics taught to me that I remember from UCSD you cannot correlate distance with velocity without time. In I guess more understanding terms you are trying to make meters (feet) equal to meters/second (mph). It doesnt mean anything that you were 65 feet apart because you could be 65 feet apart and going 2 miles an hour and it would take you a hell of a lot more time than half a second to get there. There are way too many variables such as distance, speed of both cars, his exact braking time, braking pressure, and change in velocity ( or acceleration), along with the underlying mechanices of an automobile such as at such high of speeds it is much more difficult to accelerate than the speeds that are found within the 14.?? second quarter mile that the mustang reports at stock that you gave. i know im ranting but what im trying to say is that by what you said there is no possible way that you could calculate anything more than an extremely blunt estimate that would not be useful at all.

Message: Dakotaguy:
Thats why I mentioned that we took it to approximagely 105mph. The mustang does the quarter at 100mph. I dont disagree that there are too many other variables. But if I were racing a viper and came up 65 feet behind him at 120mph isnt that reason enough to believe that I would do the quarter mile in under a modest 14.5?

Message: Maybe you can run Englishtown's 1/4 for a time slip some day, Mark! I had a '92 5.2 RC brand new, so I can identify with your '93. Based on their history, I would sy your "guesstimate" is pretty close. Look into some Dodge GenII 4x4 flares to save your paint; max looks, too.

Message: Quarter mile times are established from precisely timed gates (start & finish) and remember, the vehicle is at a DEAD stop when the clock starts. It is anybody's guess how long it actually took you to reach 105 mph. Do you realize that a vehicle can run a slower top speed than an other but have a faster E.T.???? But most importantly, please don't do crap like race on the street. Why don't you go to your local strip so you don't kill any one else on the road? Why do you think the race track requires a helmet anyway? This way you could really get your truck's E.T. without guessing.

Message: What you should do is set your trip meter to zero and find a strip on the hwy that's a little more than a mile. Then as soon as you hit .2 (two tenth)look at your speed. that should give you a indication how fast your truck is.
The GT Mustang gives out just a bit more power than a Dakota R/T (260vs250) And of course the toruqe output is in the 360's favor (345vs302)
I just wonder what a late 03 R/T edition numbers would run?
But if your have to race a Mustang. Just make sure it doesn't say SVT anywhere on car.
