Subject: Ball Joint Question IP: Logged
Message: I read so many posts about people getting their ball joints replaced at very low mileage. My question is...is Dodge using the same ball joints that were just replaced? If so, then what's to stop the "new" ball joints to crap out after the same low mileage?...and of course, the next time they will no longer be under warranty..right?
I have a new 2003..and I plan on getting them checked out before warranty period is up, but I obviously don't want the same crappy ones installed. Maybe by that time after all the complaints, they will have gotten their act together.

Message: At 22,000 miles, I'm assuming you are still under warranty...but you are replacing with Moog's?
Is so, then the replacements that are putting on are still crap...right? Why don't they replace with a better ball joint???

Message: I had mine checked beefore my 3/36 warranty ran out. Then finally had an alignment done by goodyear, with the state of the art 4 wheel thingy, and they didn't way a word about my ball joints being worn.
I've got a 01, QC, 4.7, 5spd, 2wd, Trailer towing with LSD, tire and handling pack, etc.
I don't know why mine are still OK at 45K miles, but I feel your pain, I guess I got lucky on this one.
Some one posted about using the grease in a spray can with the little red hose on the end, slipping under the edge of the seal, and filling the seal periodically with grease! That's a good idea, I keep meaning to do that myself!
I posted the basics of my truck, wondering, if somehow this set up spares the ball joits somehow?

Message: I don't think its your set up Todd, I wonder if bad metalurgy combined with bad design might be behind this. If anyone deserves bad ball joints it would be me - 4x4 on bumpy roads, long gravel driveway, heavy snow plow, driven hard - but mine are still OK at 31,000. I don't think surrounding the joint with grease does much; it doesn't really get the grease into the joint itself. I wonder if inconsistent batches of steel were used in these ball joints on top of problems that could be expected from non-greasable joints.

Message: I think I've got this problem coming, too, at 26k miles. There's some aweful sounds going on, and some resistance coming out of the un-lube-able front end when I turn the wheels.
As for a class action suit, as someone mentioned, I've suggested this to the person...I get advice from...and suggested he look at the boards.

Message:
There was a report on CBS October 27, 2003 about ball joint failure shortly after truck reaches 30k miles --- but how much did CBS "play it up"? Chrysler will not issue a recall and is a therefore the subject of a class action lawsuit.
Here is a different take.
If NBC had aired the special they would have worked some explosions into the story! Remember when they did this once for "effects"? Maybe CBS will hire the NBC Dateline pyrotechnic professionals to rig charges of C4 to the ball joints next time.
My concern --- "How" and "Why" does the failure occur? ... and why haven't they done something about it?

Message: I replaced the uppers in my '02 quad at 2,000
miles. (That's when I dropped my then new
truck.)
A bunch of rusty water ran out of both upper
ball joints when I separated the spindle from
the upper A-arm.
The factory joints had zero grease inside the
boot.
I could tip the top of the front wheel in and out
about 1/16" or so each way. I used moog
replacements and it's been good so far.
BTW my lowers still seem ok and I've got
about 12,000 miles on my truck now.
Later,
Lemmers
