Subject: Cold 2nd Gear Sticking IP: Logged
Message: Yo Team~
I have a 99 Dak Clubcab Auto 4x4 with 5.2, and when the truck is cold (first 5 minutes of driving) it wants to hang in second gear.
Only way to get it to shift is by running it up to about 2800 rpms, or by letting off the gas completely for about 2 seconds.
Any ideas? Dealership said this is "normal" - if it's designed to be this way, what's the purpose?
Thanks!
Ryan

Message: Okay - I think I may have found the reason for this...
I think the TV cable has to be fine-tuned...I had moved it just a few clicks to get a firmer shift - this also raises the shift points. I moved it back to where I thought stock might have been, or even a little further, and it did the opposite this morning...it really flared into second gear, but at the right time. (revs jumped until it caught)
I'm thinking if I back that thing off just a notch or two I'll have it. I'll keep you posted - any more ideas, please let me know.

ps-your third gear problem IS normal, it won't shift out of third and into OD until your tranny fluid is over 40 degrees.

Message: Okay,
I've futzed with the TV cable all day long, and either it doesn't shift out of second until 3k, or it slips into gear like a mother...I don't know what to do.
Again, once it's completely warmed up, it's totally fine, shifts great.
Any suggestions on what might be the cause/solution would be great. The tranny shops around town are all about screwing ya.

Message: No expert here. My 99 5.9 Durango is the same. What about the governor pressure sensor and solenoid?

Message: This is normal according to the manufacturer. My 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee did the same thing. Chrysler transmission fluid is thicker than Ford or Chevy for whatever reason and when it's cold, it's like maple syrup. Also the computer delays shifting to speed up the warming process of the transmission. Just my two cents.

Message: I remember reading in a Mopar magazine that the torque converter does not fill when the transmission is in Park. It fills in Gear and in neutral only. My Jeep has the same feeling from first to second- it feels like for the first five minutes it doesn't want to shift. After it warms up, shifting is fine. Have you tried idling in neutral for a minute of two before driving to see if that helps?
