Subject: V6 vs. V8 IP: Logged
Message: Hello all,
I'm in the market for '04 Dakota and I'm not sure which way I should go. The HP of the V6 is now 210. Is it a good idea to spend the extra 6 bills and jump into the V8 or is the V6 enough power with the extra power they found? I'm not sure if I want to get the Club or the Quad, which could make my decision as to which motor I should get. Any help would be great!!! Thanks

Message: the v6 is now the 3.7 same one in the rams & jeep liberty. there's not much aftermarket for it out there.
KB started a supercharger for the liberty but has pulled out on the project.

Message: I have a Dakota Sport 3.9, 5 spd, with a fiew mods and it goes pretty fast, especially in 4 wheel in the snow but if you are looking for pulling power get the V8.
My suggestion is to get the Dakota Sport Plus with an extended cab and a 318 under the hood, that is if you don't worry too much about gas mileage.
P.S. - Just so you know the new 3.7 motor is just that, New and unproven.

Message: IF I was to buy another Dakota I would get the same thing I currently have.... Quad Cab V8. Having that extra door(s) is great. any shopping you have, dogs, kids, motorcycle gear, fire gear, coolers, luggage etc, fits right in. Oh, and 3 adults will fit in the back seat!!!! Now, not everything all at once - but I think you understand what I mean!
V8 hands down. I had some fire wood in the bed and towing my pop-up camper and still beat my friend in her V6 (exact same truck but V6) and all she had was a cooler of beer in her truck!
The gas usage is not noticable between the 2 under normal usage.
The only draw back is the maintanence costs of those 2 extra cylinders!
Good luck and enjoy.

Message: Get the 8. There is a lot more to this than just peak HP #s. You want good power at lower rpm too, the 8 has bettter power where you need it.

Message: I own two DAK's
Both black ;)
Sport Truck: 97' 4x2 V6 5-speed 124k Miles
Plow Truck: 02' 4x4 V8 Auto 12k Miles
I love both of them. Ordered the 1st one from the factory. Only wish I wasn't so stingy and went ahead and paid the extra $489 for the 318.
My recommendation is V8. The 4x4 V8 has an awesome ability to go any where through the snow. I snatched out numerous F150's last winter.
My only regret is taking the 4x4 with autoXmission off the dealers lot when I really wanted the 5-speed.
I prefer to shift my truck my self and I drive the V6 like the big rigs, slowing for the traffic lights well in advance. Only turned the rotors once and one set of brake pads installed in 120k miles. (Still using Orig Clutch & PP too)
Plus the engine sound is good with the flowmaster cat-bak on the V6 5-speed, bet it would be awesome on a V8 5-speed.
I hope the new DC 4.7L V8 is gonna be as reliable as the Mopar Magnum engines has been.

I have NEVER heard anyone say .... "gee I wish that I had gotten a V-6 in my Dakota instead of a V-8".
Just something to think about.

Message: I don't think the new V6 (based off the OHC 4.7L) would be a bad idea if you just going to get a regular cab with a 5 speed "shift it your self" tranny. thats really all you need if you going to haul plywood, garbage, flodding chairs, ect.
I don't think getting a V8 would hurt to much in the econo section. There are some people here reporting about 20 MPG (hwy) on the R/T dakota that has the good Ole 360 motor.

Message: I can tell you what to do. Go drive them both and see what you like better and if the v6 is enough power for you. If you were just getting a 2x4 regular cab then the v6 would not be that bad, I drove one with a 5 speed and it really moved on down the road. I also drove the 4 door quad cab, 4x4 with the v8 and it was not much if any faster then the v6 but that has a lot to do with weight and other factors.
If it was up to me, it would depend on the model of truck because like I said the V6 will move that little regular cab 2x4 with no problem.
