Subject: cloyes timing chains IP: Logged
Message: There ar two Cloyes timing sets listed for the Dakota... one is the Cloyes true roller and it is like 45 bucks, the other is the Cloyes Street True roller and it is 89 bucks. The Cloyes street True roller is claiming 10 HP gains when installed. Does anyone know which one I should go with, or have any experience with either of these Cloyes timing sets? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Message: My personal experience with Cloyes has not been good. I have seen three Cloyes chains literally start to come apart in the last year. One, we caught while checking a motor over. The other two we lost the motors. I would not recommend a Cloyes chain at all. Comp Cams has a good chain for your motor, I think the part number is 2103.

Message: Peculiar. Cloyes typically has had a good rep. It'd be interesting to see follow-up on those failures. As for me, I just got Summit's true roller. Wondering what the difference is with the "Street roller." Where were these chains listed?

Message: A timing chain (by itself) can't produce HP gains, it (a new one) can only restore performance (HP).

Message: That is unless you install it so valve timing is advanced (which I wouldn't do on an otherwise stock motor).

Message: Street TrueRoller has three keyways on the crank sprocket - one for stock (factory) timing, one for +4 degrees, one for -4 degrees. Also I think the cam sprocket is either cast iron or a harder steel alloy than the $45 TrueRoller.
(sorry, this should have been the first thing I posted)

Message: I found the listings on the Jeg's website. I have heard only good things about Cloyes, but you seem to have first hand experince. I have heard that Mopar Performance chains have a tendency to stretch quickly, but I will look into the CompCams set. If i do go with the Cloyes, its going to be the cheaper one, cause i am not advancing the timing.
gen1dak... how do you like Summits True Roller? Any improvements in noise reduction? Do you have a part number on that timing chain?
Thanks to everyone for their input.

Message: I had only heard good things about Cloyes myself. The one we caught before the motor went, there were several links that were literally starting to separate.

Message: I have been calling around about the Comp Cams chain, and its the 2103 one that i have been asking about, and no one can give me confirmation that it is the one for my pickup. If it fits the 318, then its fits the 3.9L. I found it for 39.95 at racenet.net. Comp Cams doesnt even know if it will fit or not. I would really like to stay away from the Mopar Performance Chain, and if Cloyes are not all they are hyped to be, then I want a comp cams chain. I think Edelbrock makes one too. Im looking into that.

Message: I double checked the part number, the 2103 will definitely fit your truck. Good luck!

Message: Looks like you've gotten your deal settled. Anyway, I don't believe you'll find a noise reduction. Granted, there's a reduction in friction with true rollers, but the chains are not the so-called "quiet" or "silent" chains. Those quiet ones tend to stretch easier. On the HP question, I was kinda thinking the +10hp gain was an angle to push the multi-keyway sprocket. As already stated, that's the only way to boost hp. Looks like that's what they're doing. I was gonna get the Cloyes, but the Summit was a bit less at the places I searched. As for my Summit model, it's a $40 model that has the 3 keyways for -4, straight up, and +4. Nice stout piece. I wanted a chain that'd last a long time (hopefully as long as the water pump). Next time, I want gear drive!

Message: I think i got the chain covered and everything, its gonna be between the Edelbrock and Comp Cam... but probably the Comp Cam cause its cheaper. I got to get the tensioner too, that thing is about 25 and then I'll be on my way. And I cant forget my gasket kit...
