Subject: Ball joint issue on NBC News IP: Logged
Message: Anybody see NBC Nightly News tonight? #3 story was about Durango/Dakota ball joints - complaints in massive numbers, demands for a recall, class action lawsuit, etc. Probably wishful thinking, but maybe the pressure on DC to do something about it is increasing?

Message: I saw the show on CBS. The ball joints were falling apart on peoples Durangos after 31,000 miles. They went to a Dodge dealership and questioned a mechanic and he said that actually he'd seen the ball joints fall apart more often on Dakotas since they share the same front end as the Durangos.
Check your ball joints and listen for clicking noises from the front end. Some people had the whole wheel and axle fall off. If any of you hear how we can join in with the suit filed against Dodge, please post the information here so that we can all join in.

Message: so where can i get good aftermarket ball joints? I have a 2001 QC 4x4 and i'm getting a bump in the front end now. I may nip this in the bud before the wheels fly off.
I checked with Advance auto and AutoZone and they don't have anything.
Any suggestions?

Message: To bman42. I have a 97 Dakota 4X4 with 103,000 miles on it and just replaced the ball joints last week. I must have had the one good set they made for that truck. But the reason the upper ball joints go bad is that Chrysler must have saved 10 cents because they don't have a grease fitting on them so there is no way to grease them. Moog makes replacement ball joints for the Dakota they are about 200 dollars for all four. The Moog joints have a grease fitting that allows you to grease them.

Message: There are many vehicles on the road today whose balljoints are sealed and do not have grease fittings, and they last for many thousands of miles. The biggest problem with the Dakota/Durango balljoints, as I understand it, is that in addition to eliminating the grease fitting, they also eliminated the grease in the joint itself.

Message: you guys know that you can grease these ball joints from the factory right?
All you have to do is get a grease needle for a grease gun and puncture the rubber boot and squirt grease in.
didnt know if you guys knew about grease needles or not i just found out about them the other day

Message: I wonder if the brake rotor problems are contributing to early failure of the ball joints. My rotors suddenly caused servere shaking when braking, with no advanced warning. This happened at 26,000 miles, with 90% highway miles. Dealer cut the rotors and charged me $148 since brake warranty ends at 12,000 miles. This morning suddenly got servere shaking again (now at 29,000 miles), just what I needed on rain slickened highways. It would be interesting to see how many vehicles first experienced brake rotor issues. I did submit a complaint with Customer One, but they didn't want to hear about it, and with National Transportation Board.
