Subject: new water pump -> quieter engine? IP: Logged
Message: I had a squeal in my engine. It turned out not to be the belt, nor the tensioner, but bad bearings in the water pump. I had it replaced today, and the engine is much quieter! Can someone tell me why a bad water pump would result in a louder engine?
Also, when I turn the truck on, it doesn't rev up to such a high RPM before settling to a smooth idle. Again, how does a new (properly functioning) water pump cause this?
Thanks!

Message: Not sure about the RPM thing, but didn't you just answer your own first question?

Message: What are the specifics of your truck? Mine is a 99 CC 5.2 5 speed. I have this noise that occurs just as the rpms start to go up. It sounds like a belt queal but it was there the day after putting on a new Goodyear belt. I have been thinking that it could be the two things you thought. To answer your question, when the bearings start to go they cause enuff vibration to SOUND like a squeal. I just want to verify that my sound is more then likely the same problem as yours before spending Modification money on something that isn't broke.

Message: I have a 99 Club Cab 4x4 v8 318. My squeal sounded just like any old belt squeal, except that it was inconsistent. Sometimes it would be there, sometimes it wouldn't. When-ever it was there, it would go away when I accelerated. The odd thing, which should have alerted me that it was the water pump, was that when I stood beside the engine bay (not in front of it), the squeal had sort of a puffing component to it.
It reminded me very much of a toy I had as a kid, Mr. Machine. You wound him up and let him go and you could see his gears turning. He'd roll along and go WHIRR puff puff POP BEEP!
When I originally asked about the loudness of my engine, it's an overall thing. It's not quieter now because it revs lower. It's like the difference between an OEM exhaust and a Flowmaster 40. My truck is just 'more quiet' now that the pump is replaced. I was wondering how operation of the pump could affect the overall noise output of the cylinders.
The lower revving, maybe that's because the engine doesn't have to work harder to get the coolant flowing.

Message: Nate “affect the overall noise output of the cylinders?” that I can’t say, sorry. But what you described about the noise is the same as me, I guess I will be checking on replacing my pump considering I travel home each weekend (around 400 mile round trip). The last part of your last post makes since because if the bearings are binding it will cause drag on the engine and your PCM will compensate by adding more throttle/IAT to keep it at the prescribed RPM in essence making the engine to work harder. I think I just answered your original question actually, if anyone has anything better please chime in.

Message: Walter - If the water pump bearings were bad enough to put any appreciable additional load on the motor that pump would tear itself to pieces in very short order.
Nate - The additional noise that you're not hearing since replacing the pump was generated by the old pump, not the engine itself (unless you performed some other service at the time).

Message: Also, bearing slop (in the pump) can cause excessive belt noise.

Message: When this noise started on my 97 5.2, it took about 50 miles for the water pump to "lock-up" and let me tell you, you don't want that to happen while you're driving down the highway! It created so much drag that it threw the belt off and, of course, with no water pump that 5.2 V-8 heats up REAL FAST. Unfortunately, I was on a portion of elevated freeway with no shoulder and had to drive almost a half mile before coming to an exit ramp. Temp gauge was pegged by the time I got shut down. Antifreeze everywhere! Fortunately, I didn't do any damage. Don't let this go on for ANY length of time... you don't get much warning.

Message: the pcm cannot add more IAT or intake air tempurature. The only thing that can add more intake air tempurature is warming up the ambiant air temp or in plain English it gets warmer out side.
