Subject: misfire / valve chatter
IP: Logged

Message:
I picked up a 97 Dak with the V8 (318) a couple of months ago and all was fine until last week. I was told to expect some valve chatter going uphill on the highway. Driving home the other night the valves sounded as if they were going to pop through the hood! 15 minutes later the check engine light came on so I stopped by the nearest AutoZone for a diagnosis. AutoZone will read and clear the codes for free. There were six codes - misfire in six of the eight cyls. I changed the plugs, the wires, the dist. cap and the rotor, had the codes cleared and drove away. NOTE: on the drivers side, all four wire looms were melted to the engine. Within five miles the check engine light came back on - a recheck said that there was still a misfire on #8 cyl. I reinstalled the plug and the wire and it's still there - help! any advice on how to fix this thing?

I could be missing something here, but valve clatter, going uphill on the highway, sounds suspiciously like---PREDETONATION, pinging, whatever you want to call it. There are various ways to reduce, or get rid of it. Start a search for it, you'll find lots of good advice, tricks, whichery, etc.

Sorry, I don't know where to begin on your 5.2.

Fill up with premium. See if the chatter goes away. A 180 degree thermostat will also help. If it still chatters, your intake belly pan gasket may be bad.

Since you have melted wire looms and misfire codes, I think we are looking at something more than detonation here. Try to find out why the looms melted and correct any wiring problems (improperly routed wires causing crossfire ?). And in the future be very wary if someone tells you to expect something wrong like that ( seems like a variation of the usual B.S. line "they all do that" ). I don't believe detonation sets misfire codes.

Thanks all. The "they all do that' line was given to me by friends who also have the 318. I believe that changing the wires/plugs SHOULD have fixed the problem with the misfires, and it did for 5 of the 6 but how do I fix #8? try another plug/wire?

u know u may have also a disconnected injector nozzle(did that once triped a code),clogged, bad wiring, or even worse a bad piston due to pinging id check compression on the miss firing cylinder if nothing else shows up
does this vehicle run smooth or feel like its missing?

She runs smooth, at idle you'd never know it was misfiring. In gear at a stop, it loops just a bit so I'm not sure what the problem is. I have to wait until Sat to get back under the hood. Fortunately I only have to drive 3 miles to catch a ride to work. I'll check the compression but it could be a simple as a bad wire (I hope)

yeah my engine ran smooth also strange isnt it?

i seen the line about the belly pan gasket hes right that will cause excess pinging
( please correct me if im wrong) how i was told to check that was to see if u see oil when u look through ur tb into the intake manifold

My 97 5.2 seems to be having the same problem. I have been able to only get a misfire on #1. I have new plugs, wires, caps, and rotor. She runs fine with no signs of misfire. How would i check to see if an injector nozzle has been disconnected?

To Just Looking....... Yes, you look down the Throttle Body throat into the intake. A leaking belly pan gasket will allow oil to be sucked into the intake. This leak causes a run-lean condition that causes pinging.

Guys, melted plug wires have been around since the first wires were on an engine. The OEMs have cheap skins that melt if you look at them the wrong way. Pinging will result in even hotter head temps which will make the melting worse, but even properly running engines will roast regular wires. You need some hi-quality silicone wrapped wires or something along those lines to keep them from frying.
