Subject: Electronic Trailer Brakes IP: Logged
Message: I just bought an electronic brake controller that is pre-wired for my 02 Dakota Quad Cab. I looked underneath the dash for the wiring harness, but I'll be damned if I can find it. Can some one please tell me where this thing might be?

Message: What do you mean, 'pre-wired' controller? Do you mean that it wires sticking out of it, or that there's a specific, single plug receiving all those wires? Usually you have to use the wiring diagram that comes with the controller, and properly install it into your vehicle (which is pretty simple if you know anything at all about electronics or wiring).

Message: The wiring harness for the electric brakes will only be there if you have the trailer towing package. If so, it is supposedly up underneath the dash on the left hand side. It is a blue 4-pin connector.

Message: The controller is wired to plug directly into a wiring harness. No cutting of splicing needs to happen. However, my 4x4 Sport apparently may not have a towing package and this blue plug may not exist. Thanks for the help!

Message: bibrico, I have recently installed a controller on my 03 quad with the trailer tow package.
Did your truck come with the class III hitch and wiring already installed?
If so look under the dash on the drivers side, look for the big group of wires they will go into a clear plastic cover with a bolt in the middle, above that is where the controller plugs into.
I had to remove the bolt to remove the main wiring to install mine because I could not get to it because of all the wires, once I plugged it in I just reinstalled the main and put the bolt back in.
As a word of caution, when working on elec. things on your truck disconnect the neg. batt. cable, wwould hate for something to happen and out pops the airbag.
Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Message: by the way the paperwork that comes with the truck makes it look like a wire with the connector hanging down but this is not the case.
