Subject: Need a little help IP: Logged
Message: I just bought a Garmin 2610 GPS for my 02 QC. I would like to install it behind the cup holder, however doing this, the receiver is not able to receiver the satellites. I am going to go with an external antenna, which will have to be put on my dash I guess? Is there an easy way to get the wires down below the dash instead of just dropping them over the front? There are some vent holes that I could put the wires down and hope I can get to them and connect it this way? I also have a Valentine 1, and would like to route the power wire the same way. Has anyone done this? Is there an easier place that I can put the GPS antenna and not have the wires hanging down the front of the dash? Thanks for any and all help you can give me.

Message: I'd suggest you sit your Garmin on top of the dash, in the "scoop" above your radio. You will want the display as close as possible to eye level, especially with a touch screen. The only place the display for my Carin 520 would fit in my car ('91 Spirit) was under the dash. I tell you, it's SCARY nodding down, up, down, up, trying to drive and read the map. One of these days I'm going to look down, up, down, CRASH!
If you end up using an external antenna, mount it at the base of the windshield. It needs to see as much of the satellite constellation as possible. Since I was doing a permanent mount, I drilled a 1/4" hole in the dash a few inches from the windshield and ran the antenna cable down inside the dash. Or you could put the antenna off to one side and just run the cable down the side of the dash.
