I'm having trouble starting my truck. Sometimes it starts just fine. Other times it starts, but labors. Other times it won't start at all--just cranks. In either of the latter two situations, I can tap on the fuel tank, and it will start. Once it is running, it runs like a champ. I never have any problems until I shut it off. I'm thinking that if it was a bad fuel pump, it would give me problems even after it's running. Am I way off base here? I took the bed off to allow easy access to the tank, and I couldn't SEE anything wrong. I tried to start it numerous times, and it always started just fine. That is, until I got twenty miles from home, and couldn't get it started again without tapping on the tank. I took the pump assembly out and cleaned all the filters, but still saw no problems. When I put it all back together, it starts fine, but I'm afraid to leave home. I asked for a fuel pump relay at the parts store and they gave me an auto shutdown relay. My Haynes manual shows this relay, as well as a fuel pump relay, but I have no idea where to locate either one of them. The relays might not have anything to do with the problem, considering that I can always get the truck started by tapping on the tank. This leads me to believe that the problem lies in the pump, but why wouldn't it give me problems while the engine is running, and why does it only give me problems at startup only half the time?
I drive a '92 club cab 4X4 LE, with a 5.2L V8.

I have a 95, 5.2 club cab. I had a similar problem with starting. Sometimes it did and sometimes it didn't. Did matter if it was hot or cold. There is a valve in the fuel pump that shuts when you shut you truck off. This traps the fuel in the line, so your pump doesn't have to reprime the whole system everytime you start your truck. Sometimes mine would shut and the truck would start and sometimes it wouldn't. It would always start on the second start if it didn't the first. i replaced the fuel pump and i haven't had a problem since.
