 Subject: HELP check engine light

my check engine light has been on for a few weeks and i finally found a buddy who had the universal code reader. my error said "evaporative emission control system leak detected (gross leak)" if anyone has any idea what that could mean or how to fix it, it would be greatly appreciated

I wouldn't jump right into replacing the cannister. Instead look for a loose or damaged line to the cannister or a loose gas cap.
