Subject: Broken Tranny mount? IP: Logged
Message: Problema - When braking hard going forward,,or making transition from R to D and hitting brakes to slow (doing it properly) I occasionally here a very loud thud/*pop* sound from right under me.
Could this be a lose, or broken tranny mount? My truck has had this very loud sound as if my bed was loose ever since I lowered it. Now I've got it back to normal ride height - still loud when I go over bumps,,,I've always thought this was the suspension,,but could never pin point it. Shops couldn't figure it out either.
Maybe it's related? Maybe the noise has got worse - something broke (tranny mount)(explaining the loud *pop* I'm hearing).
I haven't had the time to crawl under and scope it out w/some good lighting yet,,,but a friend immediately shouted the tranny when he heard it. Has anyone experienced this before?,,,heard the same thing I have?
I have an '01 CC 4.7 auto. It was lowered 2 inches all around for about 50k miles.
Is it going to be expensive to repair,,or can someone w/a mild auto knowledge do repair a tranny mount?
....any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Andy

Message: I know a broken Tranny mount in an older Dodge sounds like a thumping on the floor boards. It's often confused with bad u-joints.

Message: A tranny mount is about the same as an engine mount. It's a pretty easy job to R&R, no special tools required. The only way to really check it good is to remove it; should take less than an hour. Just raise the transmission a little bit with a floor jack, remove the bolts attaching the mount to the transmission, and the bolts attaching the crossmember to the frame; I think about 10 bolts in all. There are another 4 bolts that attach the mount to the crossmember. Once you have the mount in your hand, you'll know if it's a problem or not.
If the trans mount is bad and you replace it, be sure to replace the motor mounts as well. Otherwise you'll end up with some wierd problems you never had before.

Message: Thanks for the info .boB. Been too busy to crawl up under it lately. I'll get a good look at it this weekend though.
Graci,
