Subject: STILL PINGING...this sucks! IP: Logged
Message: So I took my '00 V6 CC to the shop yesterday...for two things:
1- MIL was on, code was Po138 (downstream O2 sensor voltage too high)
2- BAD pinging almost all the time (when warmed up)
So, they tell me that my downstream 02 sensor is bad.
I take the truck home and replace the 02 sensor with a new Bosch unit ($90 worth). Start up the truck, take it for a ride...MIL is now off (cause I reset the PCM), but IT'S STILL PINGING LIKE CRAZY!
I don't get it...it didn't do this a month ago...what could have changed? Driving on the highway is horrible...overdrive REALLY makes her ping...add a slight incline in the road, and it sounds terrible.
So, what else to check? Everything is stock...no mods. I looked down the TB into the plenum, and there is some oil in there, but it's not a puddle or anything...just looks like scum/residue.
I've had this truck for 4 months...haven't had 1 good day with it.

Message: There is an update for the pcm that will adjust the timing to help with the ping. Also that will not fix the entire problem, more than likely your valley pan gasket is blown. Remove your intake and turn it over if you see pieces of the gasket stiking out from the sides its blowing causing your truck to run lean and spark knock.

Message: The scum you saw can also be an indicator of the aforementioned blown intake valley gasket. Hughes Engines sells a kit which spreads the bolt load more evenly on the gasket to help prevent future blowouts. Cheap insurance. In that it was a sudden change, I'd think it was the gasket, especially if it doesn't resolve with a tank of premium.

Message: Don't get a flash that will retard your timing forever just because you have a bad belly pan gasket ! Look into that first.

Message: And, make sure it's not 'bad gas'. NOt the kind after bad Mexicazn food, the kind that has an octane rating lower than what the pump says it should be. Happens all the time. And ditto, DON'T get the flash that mr. geo suggested!

Message: Works for me. My engine was pinging every time I presed on the accelerator. Since I've been using Super Unleaded. Both my 01 Intrepid R/T and my '95 Dakota has been running much smoother at higher RPM.
