Ok, about 5 days ago i started the truck outside of a store, and I noticed the braking was very hard and the truck would jerk to a stop. i restarted the truck 2 more times and braking became normal. NOW, when i brake at constant foot pressure the truck stops, but if i let off the pedal ever so lightly i can feel the brakes release a bit and the pedal drops about 1/2 inch. I then half to rebrake to stop the truck again and can do this "releasing pushing farther" motion until pedal reaches about an 1" above the floor.

I but in brake fluid the other day and not sure if it was DOT. could this be the culprit? Or what is the problem causing this

its a 2000 4x4 with 84k miles and need brakes and rotors badly.

thanks for all your help.

the difference between DOT 3 and DOT 4 brake fluid is that the DOT 4 does not break down as fast under higher preasure (disk brakes use DOT 4)
It sounds to me more like an air bubble issue than a DOT rating issue.
Have you tried bleading the lines?

I havent done anything to the truck yet and as far as I can see I havent seen any leakage anywhere. I just topped off the resevoir maybe 3 das before it happened, whats the possible ways to get air into the lines?

Thanks again,
Mike
