Subject: Water Leaks 1998 Dakota

Message:
I have a 1998 Dak Sport club cab, 5.2L 4x4. I have just recently noticed that I had a significant interior water leak, on the passenger side floor pan, front and rear.

I came here and did a search and got some useful tips, talk of rear window leaks and an AC line leak.

I checked the rear window and found I was taking on water as the factory seal had cracked where the roof moulding joins the window area. I siliconed it from the inside and out, and the problem was solved. I thought I was in the clear...then it rained again...

I live in BC on the West Coast...I ruled out the AC being a factor 'cause we don't use it past August. It is wet here in the fall and it is a rain related problem.

The rear flow pan was dry, but the front was still soaked. Here is what I found and did (and this was not mentioned on the board when I looked, so I figured it would be useful to share, and it is EASY to fix).

I park nose up on a hill. I removed the kick panel (where I thought I saw a stained water track on the carpet). I removed the door panel and got out the hose. After a few minutes of soaking, I found that there was water running down the plastic splash guard behind where the door panel would be, coming in by the window crank. The factory adhesive on this material is 5 years old now, and had given way in one spot allowing the track of water to flow right onto the kick panel and into my truck.

Tracing the leak back, it was coming in through the SIDE VIEW MIRROR. I removed it, to find the gasket was tired and probably not as effective as it once was. I siliconed it to create a seal, and put it back on. I then made a slit in the splash guard and re-sealed there the water was making it through. I then used the red 3M Tuck Tape (expensive, but the only waterproof tape in the world!!) to double seal it, my incision, and along the bottom edge on the door (out of sight...).

Anyway, re-assembled and now my truck is dry again, and its pissing rain and will continue to do so until spring.

Easy fix compared to some of the other things suggested. I hope my fix works for someone else too!

You can email me if you have any questions.
