 Subject: Oil change to synthetic

Ok, I'm going to change my oil tonight. I have 1,200 miles on my 4.7. I was going to change it to a Synthetic blend for 3K then go to Mobil One happily ever after. My question is - any issues going to a Synthetic after 1,200 miles?

I changed over to Mobil 1 @ 800 miles....Im at 2600 now...People say that it is better to wait a while until it is broken in completly...If your worried, wait until the next change, but I think after 1200 you should be ok

i was just wondering, i have 63k on my 5.2 and have used mormal 10w30 untill now (changed every 3k) would i hurt anything by changing to fully synthetic? thanks

Kota wait!!! It was my experience that it is NOT a good idea to switch with that maney miles!!!
I switched in my 2.2 Shadow at around 55k and it started to leak!!! As it was still under warranty,(remember the good old 7 70?) the dealer fixed it. It was caused by going full synth. He said to go with a blend and I had no problems since.

The reason you sometimes get leaks when switching from conventional oil to synthetic is actualy the fault of the conventional oil. Conventional oil has parfin type componds that are added to increse viscosity. When these wax like componds buil up on seals it prevents oil from reaching the seal. This causes the seal to dry out and develop cracks. The cracks are kept sealed by the waxy build up on them. Synthetic does not contain viscosity improvers or parafin .When you put synthetic in the engine it strips this waxy build up off of the seals.Synthetic has about 4 times the deturgency with These cracks start to leak. Usualy if you leave them alone the synthetic oils will soften and re-expand the seals. If a vechile has realy high milliage and has been run with conventional oil I recommend that the first switch should be a blend of conventional and synthetic. I mix my own blends by mixing the conventional and synthic oils at a ratio of 50:50. I always use the same brand of conventional and synthetic when mixing the two. Most comercialy bought synthetic blends are 70% conventional oil and 30% synthetic. Then at the next oil change go total synthetic. This should minimize leaking in older high mileage vechiles run on conventional oil. I also do this with some of my older vechiles that I do not want to spend the money for full synthetic oils. It's not advisable to switch to synthetic till at least 5,000 miles. THese magnum engines take a little longer to break in. You dont want to go to synthetic until everything has broken in properly. (rings, valves, etc.) If you do, they won't seal and you'll have problems down the road. Why not wait? Not like there is going to be a problem in waiting an extra 5,000 miles. Those cars that come with sythetic are built with parts that don't need the breakin

Just to throw a wrench into the whole conversation, All 5 dealers here sell Mobile 1 Tri-synth in their parts Dept. and that is what the service dept's put in them if you take it to them for an oil change. Supposedly thats what comes in them from the factory. At least the newer Daks and Durango's anyway. Or so they all say. There again, could be wrong..

Don't get me wrong though...Synthetic is very good but somewhat expensive. Do all dealers use the tri-synthetic when you bring it to them?

Synth and regular oil are completely compatible (they can be mixed freely without worry) so changing back and forth between them shouldn't be a problem at all.

I don't reccomend going back and forth between Synth & regular oil. The Synth is much better and you reap the benifits of a much cleaner and cooler running engine. You should also invest in a good oil filter. Believe it or not the MOPAR filter does an excellent job, so do the all of the filters disigned for Synth oils. Don't worry about the breakin period either. After the first few hundred miles the engine won't breakin any faster or slower. Change to Synth(100%) not the para synth.

Switched to Mobile 1 at 5000 miles, at 18k now, no problems. Plan on sticking with the Mobile 1.

Just another testamonial for Mobil 1. I've used it in my '92 Dak 5.2L since 6000 mi. It now has 27000 mi. and 1600 runs down the drag strip. No leaks, no oil consumption, no breakage! What more could you ask for :). Also used in my 2K 4.7L Grand Cherokee since 6000 mi. 50 drag runs, 21000 mi. Same experience!

I am considering changing over to synthetic in my 98 Dodge Magnum 5.2L it currently has 56,000 miles. It has been serviced at 3,000 miles by the dealer since new. Does anyone see any problems with changing over from conv. to synth.
