Message: Listen for a rattling noise from under the hood, usually heard at heavy to full throttle, and generally (but not always) at a mid to high RPM, say anywhere between 3000 and redline.
For another example of what pinging sounds like, drive a Kia that is running perfectly...sort of a ball bearings in a blender sound.

Message: pinging also happens when you are in too high of gear at real low rpm's.
you know when your engine is pinging when your gasoline engine sounds like a deisel engine

Message: run a tank of BP 87 octane through your sweetheart. She will ping at idle all the way to the redline, even under no load.

Message: Sounds like you gargling air (not water).
Gargle some air while you sit at the computer and you got it. Close off your throat and exhale.
There are (in my experience) two types of ping.
Ping at high rpm (upon high load acceleration)
Ping at low rpm (while cruising at a low rpm, especially in overdrive)
Each type of ping has a different fix
Keep in mind that the sound of ping is the sound of your engine self-destructing.
