What is really funny about this pic is the old Durango at the bottom right. Looking at it amongst the new ones, the old Durango really brings out how UGLY the new one is!
I'm sorry but the Durango has now lost it's rugged offroad-ish powerful look. If they pull this nonsense with the Dakota, that will be very sad. Hemi or no Hemi in these things, I would never buy anything resembling what this new Durango looks like.
I am definitely a HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED DODGE FANATIC

From looking at recent spy photos of the 05 Dakota (you can find them by searching this forum), the front looks just like the durango under the covers from what can be seen. Same wheels as well and the ride height looks the same too. So I would say yes, the Dakota is based on the new Durango.

If you study pics of real Dakota prototypes on
CarConnection, not photoshop renderings
you will see that the Dakota doors pivot at the
base of the windshield- end of the hood like
the current ones do. The Durango doors pivot
8 inches further back. I don't know what
differences between the Dak and Durango in
body and frame will be because of this, but
they are different.

A couple of the trade rags quoted DC spokespeople saying that the Durango is a new platform while the 05 Dak will be based upon a "heavily revised" version of the current platform. That may not be a bad thing. From the spy pics, it looks like they're retaining a lot of similarity in the sheet metal. That may not be a good thing.

I liked the old Durango. I saw one up close at
the dealership last Friday 10/10. The interior is
neat and that's all I can say.
This is a minivan with a Hemi in it. All that's
missing are the sliding doors. Seriously. I
walked around it for 10 minutes TRYING to
like it.
It doesn't have nearly the ground clearance the
old Durangos do.
It looks like someone at DC said "People like
the Grand Cherokee. People also like the
Hummer H2... Let's design a vehicle that
looks like both!" and that's what they did.
I am glad I got my QC this year rather than
after they changed the design. They will have
to do some serious changes before I'd own
one of the new ones!

The real good news is that the new Durango will come with the 5.7 Hemi which should mean that when the new dakota comes out in '05 is should also have the 5.7 hemi option. even better, since I am not a big fan of the new body style there might be more opportunities to swap the 5.7 Hemi into my Dak and put the 5.9 Liter into my jeep.

Damn those are UGLY.
Unless we're just used to the way ours looks now.
Remember back when the Ford changed the Mustang in 1994 from the fox body????? Mustang fans hated it at first. Then it grew on you. Then they changed again in the late 90's. But they're as popular as ever!
The DODGE magazine I just got from Dodge yesterday had an advertisement for the new HEMI powered Durango for 2004. That would be GREAT if they'd put one in the Dakota. The Dakota would RULE the streets for sure.
But still... to me they look butt ugly!!!
Either I'll get used to them in a few years (and if they get a HEMI) or I'll also keep my "03 QC until IT rusts!

I saw one of these at the local Firestone shop - OMG - and I thought the Aztec was ugly! Looks like a Grand Cherokee/Caravan but the modeling putty had been left in the sun...

More uglyer than a G5 Mercedes.
I think that the Chrysler Group (joke for Daimler division) is trying to hard to copy Euro styling on there products. It might work for cars but not for trucks.
