Subject: 1997 Dakots Dash Lights. IP: Logged
Message: I recently Purchased a 1997 Dodge Dakota Sport, the night that I bought it when i turned on the lights I realized i had no parking lights, tail lights, and no dash lights (stupid me for not checking this earlier) The radio also didnt work (I knew this when i bought it) I went through the fuse panel and found two blown fuses, one in "illumination" and one in "Park / LP" I replaced these fuses, and this fixed the tail lights and parking lights, but still no dash lights. I then pulled the dashboard off, to take a look at the radio, and see about putting a factor 1999 radio in that i had laying in the garage, to my surprise when i pulled the head unit, all the wires had been cut from the harness, many of them just sitting there with exposed ends, others taped together, basically a big f**king mess. I trimmed all the wires back as to not leave any exposed copper. my questoin however is, are my non-working dash lights in any way connected to this harness problem. or is it unrelated? and either way, any suggestions on fixing it?

Message: Could very well be. On my factory radio AM/FM Cassette the radio display lights are connected to the light switch. You need to get a manual with the wiring diagrams so you trace the wires out to solve your problem.

Message: Thanks for the info.. do you happen to know of any place.. possibly around the Detroit, MI area... or a place that i could order a replacement connector from? I just need the two modular plugs.. the black one, and grey one, with like 12" leads on em so i can splice it back into the harness, and hopefully get everything working correctly, and then when i install my new radio, I can do it right, and use an adapter cable, rather than screwing up the harness like the last owner did.

Message: do your guages work?
if they don't work check the fuses with black plastic protector on them , i think it is an air bag or something, anyway i accidentallay grounded a power wire that was from the radio harness and it didn't blow the radio fuse it blew an unrelated fuse, the one with the protector thing on it, i have a 97 aswell.

Message: The Gauges work, and all the fuses check out... im thinking the screwed something up when they were taking out their stereo system before they sold it to me. Im thinking about just making my own lighting system for it, rather than dig through the harness, and end up breaking something else too, especially since i have barely enough money to keep gas in the damn thing :P BTW: adam, I live in Clarkston, so not too far from you at all.
