Subject: Ball Joint Replacement Help IP: Logged
Message: I had originally posted this on the "Off Topic" board. I probably should have posted it here instead.
I am using a 1987 Dodge Dakota front end as a replacement IFS for a 1950 Chevrolet 1/2-ton pickup that I removed the solid front axle from.
I have the tooling to replace the A-arm bushings, and the lower ball joints.
My question is with the upper ball loints. They appeared to be threaded into the A-arms.
What size socket do I need to remove the ball joints? Are they right or left-hand thread?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Message: I believe they are left hand thread,i have a new set i will check tomorrow. They require a special socket-i bought the socket from snap-on ($50-ouch!) You may be able to rent it from a local auto parts store if there is one around that offers that service.

Just ordered the 2 1/8" socket for removal of the upper ball joints (after they are broken loose with a jury rigged tool to support the stud). Got the SK 84689 socket for $30 including shipping
from www.toolparadise.com. Hope this works
rather than the Miller C-3561 socket that is 2 9/64.
