Subject: Clearing Codes on 99 Dakota

Was hoping someone could shed some light..

I have a 99 Dak Sport v6 with the check engine light on. I took it to a friend who plugged it into their scan machine at a local oil change shop. It came up with no codes. I cleared it by removing the neg batt term for @ 1 minute. It came back.

Took it to dealer who said it was the evaporator purge solenoid (easiest thing to replace under the entire hood IMHO) was going to charge me $80 diag fee $65 labor and $40 for the part. I said give me my truck back and purchased the part put it in myself (after having to put up the 80 diag) fee. Cleared the the battery again .. light comes back on.

I took it to autozone who plugged in an ODBII scanner. Still no codes.

Does anyone know how to clear the codes on the 99 Dak's? Does it require a special diag tool?

FYI I can confirm the the previous posts regarding needing to extract the codes via a ODBII tool for 99's. The key on/off did not pull anything. And using the key on while the battery cable was disconnected to drain the capacitors did not work.

Just a shot in the dark, but how many miles are on your 99? Could it be programmed to light as a reminder to change the 02 sensor at/after a predetermined mileage?

Thanks for the post. I am at 52k miles.

I have heard of that. Preprogrammed to come on for scheduled maintenance. I have not heard when or what maintenances it is set to come on for? any idea what items will trigger the light? And /or if they are supposed to display some type of fault code?

It is the check engine light that is staying on as well, even though i titled the post as clearing the fault codes.

The above post plays rather bad... but it was a bad experience with the dealer. I wound up paying $160 for no work to be performed. (and they had wanted to charge me $325 intially) $325 for a 5 minutes part change....I have since heard that this particular dealer is known in the area.

In any case, the ODBII scanners are showing no fault codes both before and after replacing the part but...the check engine light is staying on.

I have also considered that the module could be bad? Perhaps i'm misreading the posts but thus far reputable people are saying that removing the battery cable should clear any codes. I take it that would include the O2 sensor? I saw one post that indicated the ODBII scanner can clear the codes as well. I have a 90 Daytona thats my project car but have never really touched anything with an ODBII so i'm greener than green with this. Any help is appreciated.

I found the following and thought i would post it for anyone else attempting to track down how to work with the PCM's...

credits go to Speedtweaks...

Anyone else know where to find diags for the check engine light?

A much better version is found by following the link..but i dropped in some highlights..

How to check codes on a 1999 Dodge
The 1999 Dodge Dakota shop manual, page 8E-6 has the following self diagnostic test that checks the instrument cluster and CCD data bus message-controlled indicator lamps, for the other codes a DRB scan tool is required.

This is one continuous test
1. Ignition switch off
2. Press and hold the trip reset knob
3. Turn the ignition switch to on but do not start.
4. Hold the reset knob for approx 10 seconds or until the word CHEC appears in the display then release.

INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FAILURE MESSAGE

MESSAGE DESCRIPTION CORRECTION
110 A failure has been identified in the cluster CPU, RAM, or EEPROM. Replace the faulty cluster
900 The CCD data bus is not operational. 1. Check the CCD data bus connection at the cluster.
2. Check the cluster fuses.
3. Check the CCD data bus.
4. Check the CCD data bus voltage.
5. Check the CCD data bus terminations.
920 The cluster is not receiving a vehicle message from the PCM. 1. Check the PCM software level and re-flash if required.
2. Use a DRB scan tool to verify that the vehicle speed message is being sent by the PCM.
921 The cluster is not receiving a distance pulse message from the PCM. 1. Check the PCM software level and re-flash if required.
2. Use a DRB scan tool to verify that the distance pulse message is being sent by the PCM.
940 The cluster is not receiving an airbag message from the ACM 1. Check the CCD data bus connections at the ACM.
2. Check the ACM fuse.
950 The cluster is not receiving an ABS lamp-on message from the CAB. 1.Check the CCD data bus connections at the CAB
2. Check the CAB fuse.
999 An error has been discovered. 1. Record the failure message.
2. Depress the trip odometer reset button to continue the self diagnostic test.

If no fault codes appear the instrument cluster will begin a walking segment and gauge test.

Walking segment and gauge test

This test requires a visual inspection of each odometer segment as it is displayed to determine a pass or fail condition.

1. All segments will be illuminated at once.
2. Then each individual segment of the odometer display will be illuminated in sequence.
3. If any segment fails to illuminate, repeat test to confirm the failure.
4. If failure is confirmed replace the faulty instrument cluster.

The instrument cluster will perform a bulb check of each indicator lamp that the instrument cluster controls.

The instrument cluster will perform a gauge actuator test. In this test the instrument cluster circuitry positions each of the gauge needles at three different calibration points, then returns them to their relaxed position.

This ends the Self Diagnostic test. The instrument cluster will automatically exit the test and return to normal operation.
