Message: Go to Argentina and drive one back. They're built there.
I think it was the September Sport Truck that had a story on diesels in SUV's in Europe and how they may be coming here.
For some strange reason the government is constantly tightening the emissions regulations on small diesel engines to the point where it's too expensive to put one in a light truck or SUV.
Hmmmmm. Almost makes you think they're in bed with the oil companies.
Nahhh.

Message: Worldwide sulfur emissions limits will be screwed down really tight in both Europe and usa by 2006. This reduces acid rain, and more important for drivers/owners, improves the controlability of diesel motors. The only downside is the requirement to lube valves a little differently or make them harder, because sulfur in the old fuel had a bit of a lubricating effect.

Message: U.S. grade diesel is supposed to be changed here soon down to 15ppt from something like 300ppt. It's the soot in diesel that makes it dirty.

Message: CT, the 300 down to 15 thing is for sulfur. And its 15ppm, not thousand. Soot has a lot of causes, mostly having to do with how well the ignition in the cylinder progresses. For example, in the old days some drivers had non-standard injectors installed in their motors (maybe a weird length) and on acceleration huge black clouds of soot would belch out of the stacks. All visual effects, no other reason I know of. The weird injector configuration created lousy burning, so you got all that soot. New generation diesel engines, for all sizes and kinds of vehicles, are build different to be much more efficient, so have less soot and better control - but that requires a lot less sulfur in the fuel to start with.
