Subject: Dak VS. Durango GCVWR IP: Logged
Message: The 2001 Towing guide lists the GCVWR for 5.9L 3.55 geared Durango as 10,500 and the 3.92 as 12,200. Whereas the Dakota 5.9L Quad Cab 3.55 is listed as 10,500 and the 3.92 is listed as 10,800.
I'm not sure why the two vehicles would be the same with 3.55 gears and be so different with 3.92 gears. The curb weight of both vehicles is fairly close.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why this would be?

Message: This seems to be one of the mysteries of the Dakota. Both the Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee with comparable powertrains and rear ends have significantly higher GCVWR than the Dakota QC. I don't know how much of this is driven by marketing vs. sound engineering reasons. The SUV market may be tougher and DC is looking for an additional edge so the GCVWRs are bumped up. The Dakota may already be so far ahead of it's peers in this department that the marketing guru's don't feel there is a need for anything higher. One would think that the long wheelbase QC would be a superior tow vehicle over the short wheelbase Durango and Jeep GC, at least in the stability department.
