Subject: COLIBRI POWER WINDOW INSTALL HELP
IP: Logged

Message:
I just received the Colibri Universal Power Window Kit with switches. I could really use some help with the install.

Anyone have pictures or suggestions regarding the installation? There really isn't any great pics of the kit actually installed, and some of the references in the instructions are vague.

If you've done this install, or a similar one, I could use some pointers.

Thanks
-Kevin

Hey kevin I did that earlier this summer. I cut away some of the metal around the window winder so the drive hub sits far enough down on the winder and put the motor down in the big opening in the door. I mounted the switches in front of the winder mech. had to cut through the metal ther as well. I have a 02 not knowing what year you have if your door pannel is different you might find a better location.. It took me most of a saturday to install the elec. wind. and power door locks w/ keyless entry. I am very happy with the results but if i can find door pannels that were from a power window truck i will buy them just for a cleaner mor factory look. Good luck I'll watch incase you have any more queastions. drew

Cut metal!? That I didn't expect to hear. I have a 99, and I also got the door lock actuater kit as well with switches. I plan to put in an alarm, but I want to complete this install first.

Maybe this will make more sense when I actually go out to the truck and line things up. Right now both my front door panels are off (I just installed new speakers)....so I'm driving around like this till the weekend when I can dedicate a complete day or more to getting the project done.

What did you use to cut the metal?

tinsnips not much and mayby your doors are a little different around the window winder. My mechanizime wouldn't slide down over winder far enough so i trimmed about an inch larger opening around the post the window crank went on.

Too bad u didn't have a pic cause that doesn't sound anything like my truck. The window crank (where the manual handle used to be) is simply sticking out from the door. I assumed the new power window kit would fit over (more like around) that piece sticking out.

Does any part of this kit go 'behind' the door panel. It's hard to describe, but the door is 'hollow', so much of the manual window mechanism is inside the door...the only part I have access to is the part the window crank handle (the one u use to open and close the window) fits onto. I assume you meant that the new power window mechanism stuck out too far so the door panel wouldn't go back on?

I need to find some pics of this thing installed on a similar door so I don't screw up the installation.

With that said, doe sit work well? Fast? Slow? noisy? I wanted to grease the manual mechanism beforehand...but I'm not sure if I can even access that part.

Thanks for your feedback...here I was worried about the wiring, and there may be more to this.

Massachusetts.

I'm gonna attempt the install tomorrow (calling in sick :-)). I agree it's difficult to explain...my guess is once I'm actually out there with the kit and my truck, it will probably work out.

I'm in a hurry cause I get my new reciever soon...and as soon and I want to get an alarm installed beforehand....but before that I need to finish the power window and door lock install.

I intentionally did not get the remore door lock kit since one comes with most alarm systems.

Thanks again for the feedback

-Kevin

Darn,

One thing I forgot to ask......how did you run the wires from the door to the interior? Did you have to drill a new hole, or were you able to use the existing factory pass-thru?

I saw the stainless door wire loom that A-1 electric was sellin. Real nice, but it was $80!

Hey 2nd Dak:

A:I'm outside now trying the install. I placed the small adapter on the handle sprocket:
Step 1...but I don't see where I can use a screw to hold it in place, the inside is not threaded? I wonder if I should just use glue?

B: I see what you meant about having to shave alittle around the door to allow the gear mechanism to seat further in...but I "THINK" even though it is protruding a little, the door should fit over it since the insulation will give a bit....and the gear mechanism is very thin. Unless you were talking about shaving some of the plastic innner door....that I will probably have to do since the black adaptor has a larger diameter than the stock hole. I bought my dremmel today!

My only concern is the motor. It seem it will reside on the lower right of the passenger door....but the window mechanism is behind it. Granted the window is all the way down now....I'll have to use 3 brackets to enusure the motor doesn't end up hitting the lower part of the window mechanism example. Did you have to do any trimming of the sheet metal for this?

Well, I probably wont wait for your answer...but I'll be checking the post frequently....feel free to email me direct.

Later and thanks

By the way, once I went out and looked at the stock wire loom there is obviously plenty of room to run more wires...next time I'll check BEFORE asking :-)

Done with the install! I don't know which wire is the ignition switch power wire...but that's the one I have to tie into to power these windows. I need to know where that wire is, how to get to it, and what color it is.

Other than that, I 'temporarily' hooked up the wires just to see if everything worked...and it does. I hooked into a lower power source (one I planned to use for neon lights) so the windows went up and down reaaal slloooow. I am assuming that connecting to the ignition switch power source makes the difference.Turns out the switches that came with the kit are also lighted. Nice little surprise.

I'm keeping the switches off of the doors until I install the door lock actuators (which I assume will be easier)

Thanks for the feedback

Regarding the door lock actuators...they seem simple enough, did you install the actuator 'inside' the hollow portion of the door, or did you simply bolt it on top? The mechanism is simple enough, I'm just unsure whether I could get the door panel back on if I attach the actuator on the outside. It will be more of a challenge putting the acutator on the inside however.
