Subject: Transmission Parasitic Power Loss

Message:
In this month's Car Craft, they have a story on different power draws. They run a motor on a dyno and then drop it in a vehicle and run it on a chasis dyno.

The motor lost 33% of it's power from flywheel to wheels! The transmission being used for the test was a Ford AOD. Does anybody know what our transmissions take away from us?

33% is a meaningless number because we don't know how much power the engine made and how much was measured at the rear wheels.

You also loose power through the differential and wheel bearings. Actually, the differential is the biggest power robber because you're bending the power 90 degrees.

I've heard its about 20 - 25 % drivetrain loss depending on which auto tranny you have, a little less for a standard.
