Subject: Changed to Autolite 3923 plugs

Message:
After hours of searching and reading about the Autolite 3923 spark plugs, I decided to convert over from my Bosch platinum plugs I installed last March. I'm chasing the famous pinging problem on my 2K 5.9L engine. Folks have expressed how wonderful these plugs were and how they fixed their pinging problem, even while going uphills. So, I made the switch. Are you reading this Harlow?
In making the switch, the cap, rotor, and all plug wires were changed out for new. I'm here to say that these plugs did NOTHING different than what my other plugs did. I wouldn't even say that my idle is smoother; my idle was already pretty smooth to begin with. But, the pinging is still there and it hasn't even been affected. My plugs are gapped to .040". The cap and rotor that came off the truck were in pretty poor shape and I really had my confidence up when I pulled them off.
The other mod that I've completed recently is the crank sensor timing mod, but I think I need some additional advance for that to help me in this case. The way I figure now, I probably only have 3-4 degrees advance, and I may need closer to 6 degrees. But, the fact remains about the 3923 plugs. In my case, they did not help the situation. I'm running medium grade octane fuel. The next step I will take is to add some octane booster to see if the problem persists or not. This truck should NOT need higher octane fuel (i.e. premium) to run properly.
Does anyone have any other advice to help me remedy my problem?

Check your plenum pan gasket, if you have pinging its a good bet that it is blown. Take a flshlight and look down into the throttle Body, hold the butterfly open, if you see any oil at the bottom the gasket is bad. Have you been using alot of oil lately for no apparent reason? This is what was causing the pinging on my 1999 5.2L, you can do a search here and see if it happens to the 5.9L also, but I think it does.

Advancing the timing would only cause more detonation! The theory behind the longer (hotter/original) plugs is a more efficient combustion (because the plug is deeper). The spray of gas is suppose to cool it and prevent the pinging. So in theory, the 3923 (cooler/shorter) may not be as efficient.

When I changed my plugs, cap, and rotor, I did take a look down the throttle body and saw SOME oil residue in the intake plenum. So, I could change out the gasket, but which gasket exactly? Are you talking about the gasket where the throttle body bolts to the intake plenum?

Samtheman, you're right. More advance will increase the detonation as I had suspected. It's just that everyone else who has done this mod noted the pinging was gone AFTER they advanced their timing. I thought it was weird myself, so I tried it. My 300ZXTT is retarded 2 degrees from the factory setting to thwart detonation under high boost levels. I figured I should do the same for the truck, but for now there may be another issue for the pinging that is not really related to the timing. Perhaps this gasket that jdllizard spoke of.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Kris
